Prostate cancer slowed by
low-fat diet, research shows
WASHINGTON (AP) — Eating lean could become a key part of treating prostate cancer if clinical studies confirm laboratory findings that a low-fat diet cuts die rate of tumor growth by at least half.
A study published today in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute showed that human prostate cancer tumors in mice fed low-fat food grew' at a markedly slower rate than did tumors in mice fed a diet enriched with the fat levels typically consumed by American men.
“What we found was astonishing to us,” said Dr. William R. Fair, a member of a research team at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York. “Tumors didn’t disappear, but the decrease in growth was really impressive.”
Prostate cancer generally is slow growing, said Fair, and if it can be slowed even more by reducing fat “then it is possible that many men wouldn’t need anything more than
Most prostate cancers develop around the age of 60, said Fair, and “if we are able to a tell a 60-year-old that he could do something to slow growth of die cancer for 30 years, that’s the same as a cure for most men.”
In the mouse study, Fair and his colleagues injected prostate cancer cells into special laboratory mice that can grow human cancers. The mice, at the time, were being fed a com oil diet that included 40.5 percent fat, about the same fat content as the diet of the average American male adult.
Once the prostate cancer tumors started growing in the mice, the animals were divided into four groups and each group started receiving different levels of fat, ranging from a high of 40.5 percent to a low of 2.3 percent fat per calorie.
After 11 weeks, the mice were killed and tumor growth was measured, along with blood chemistry.
Tumor growth was 2 1/2 times
greater in mice on the high-fat diet than for mice on the lowest-fat diet. For mice on a 21.2 percent fat diet, the tumor growth was about half that of the mice on the highest-fat diet.
Fair said the mouse study is unique because it showed the growth of existing prostate tumors could be slowed by switching from a high-fat to a lean diet.
Dietary effects also were reflected in tested levels of prostate specific antigen, or PSA, in the rodents’ blood. High levels of PSA often indicate cancer growth.
Mice on the leanest diet had PSA counts about 35 percent of the level of mice on the high-fat diets.
Dr. J. Michael Gaziano and Dr. Charles H. Hennekens, both of Harvard Medical School, said in a Journal editorial that the findings “have contributed important and relevant data to an emerging body of evidence on dietary fat and risk of prostate cancer.”
World, Nation BriefsIraqi deserter captured by Kuwaiti soldiers
KUWAIT (AP) — Police have arrested an Iraqi soldier who crossed the desert border into Kuwait.
Interior Ministry spokesman Lt. Col. Adel al-Ibrahim said Tuesday the man was arrested Monday. He would not give the soldier’s name, but said he was unarmed.
The man told Kuwaiti authorities he was an army deserter and had fled to Kuwait to avoid punishment, the progovernment Al-Anba newspaper said Tuesday.
Al-Ibrahim refused to comment on the report in Al-Anba, which also said the soldier told interrogators that Saddam Hussein’s regime had massed troops in the southern region of Al-Zubair to subdue opposition.
The Sunday Times of London reported Iraq was massing troops and armor near the border with Kuwait, in what threatened to be a replay of its August 1990 invasion of the emirate.
Washington has played down the report, saying there appeared to be no “imminent danger to Kuwait.” .Rood waters swoop 129 to their deaths in Bangladesh
DHAKA, Bangladesh (AP) — At least 129 people have been reported killed by floods in northern Bangladesh, including 13 children who drowned after being swept from their homes.
In Dhaka, the Relief Ministry has recorded only 25 deaths since monsoon
floods began devastating the region Sept. 27. Newspapers, which on Tuesday put the death toll at 129, often report fatalities from natural disasters ahead of the government.
The Bangladesh Observer said at least 13 children were washed away Monday from flooded homes in the hard-hit districts of Bogra, Gaibandha, Naogaon, Rangpur and Dinajpur.
Ten other people drowned in flood waters in the northern region Monday, and poisonous snakes flushed out by the floods killed five people, the newspaper said.
The Relief Ministry said the floods have affected 6.6 million people in 14 northern districts. Newspapers said at least 100,000 people have been left homeless and that 15,000 homes have been destroyed.Mom acquitted of murder after kids die in sweltering car
McMinnville, Tenn. (ap) — a
mother was acquitted of murder but convicted of abusing her two toddlers, who died after she left them in a sweltering car while she drank in her boyfriend’s motel room.
Jennie Bain Ducker faces 15 to 25 years in po son for each of two counts of aggravated child abuse in file deaths of her sons, Devin, 2, and Dustin, I. She is to be sentenced Nov. 9.
, “I think she wants punishment. She feels very guilty,” said her attorney, Mike Galligan. “It’s her parents that
are hurting. They’ve lost two grandchildren and a daughter.”
Galligan said he would appeal.
Ducker, 20, who had been free on $75,000 bond, tearfully embraced her parents before being taken into custody.
The boys were overcome with heat June 6 after their mother left them strapped in their car seats for at least eight hours while she drank and then fell asleep in a boyfriend’s motel room. The temperature inside the car reached an estimated 120.
Her blood alcohol at the time she fell asleep was estimated to be nearly double the state’s legal limit for intoxicatioaIndians receive Jail sentences after attack on pizza delivery man
EVERETT, Wash. (AP) — A judge sentenced two Indian teen-agers to prison for an attack on a pizza delivery driver, cutting short an expenment in justice in which the youths were banished to remote Alaskan islands.
Snohomish County Judge John Allendoerfer said Tuesday he was ending the yearlong judicial rehabilitation experiment because of “flaws which unfortunately threaten its credibility and integrity.”
The judge said he saw dramatic changes for the good in Simon Roberts and Adrian Guthrie, both 18, but there were too many problems with banishment — including reports of unauthorized travel and infighting among Alaska tribal judges.
