By DAVID MAY Staff Writer There people who hate their jobs some who could take or leave their jobs and others who love their work Place Neel Etheredge in the latter category It his love for the outdoors and his work as a state game warden that made it difficult for him to reach what he says is the most difficult decision he has had to make Retire "If I was still in A I condition physical condition I would work un til the end of time because I love it even more Twenty four hours just never seemed like enough time to do the things and cover the places I w anted to said Etheredge Back and vision problems have forced the popular SS Near old into an early retirement that officially began last Tuesday of course that is gtxxl news for Neel's hunting and fishing buddies which include his five year old grandson Jarrett Stroud Yeah he s the best partner I ve ever had He s my fishing buddy said Neel VShile he plans to spend time fishing and hunting hts wife Vienna has lined up enough house chores that N«*el said will keep me busy for atxxit lr, \ears Etheredge was bom and raised in South Central Texas He was born in Seguin and raised in Lockhart. where he graduated in 1951 He join ed the Navy where he spent one year after having to leave on hardship following the death of his father He began his career as a state game warden on Sept I. 1963. most of which has spent here in ('omaI County His mother lives in lx>ckhart He has two children from a previous marriage who have since provided him with two grandchildren He married Nlonna here in 1972 and she brought into his life three step children and a step grandchild Etheredge almost didn t graduate from high school Because of troubles at home Noel said he had made his mind up his senior year to quit and turned in his books But a teacher took a personal interest in him **C T McCrury said he d see me Monday and if not he was going to come and beat the hell out of me and drag me back recanted Etheredge I believe to do this day he would have If it hadn t have been for him taking that interest in me I don I what might have happen ed to me Nee! I d chose Bob ” He’s something else He’s the perfect partner " said Wofford Wof ford has been Etheredge * It was just a blessing to have him as a partner " Wofford said he will wait on get ting a new partner, "but I will not forget Neel Etheredge He has been like a father to me " His accomplishments as a game warden have been completing what he felt was a successful career His personal highlight came in 1982 when he was presented with the Shkar International Safari Club a wildlife game official The most difficult part of his job was dealing with family and relatives of a drowning victim Perhaps it was irony that Neel on his last day and even last hour as game warden h»* was called to Ca nyon Lake or • ast time for a drowning "I took a personal interest in the relatives and survivors and each time it got a little harder That was a sad part of my job But F'.theredge will long be remembered by his colleagues and many friends as a man of great unselfishness, fairness and knack for telling a good tale He w ill be missed, but not forgotten found a second a third and finally a fourth group of vio.ators each time calling the judge out into the cold of night He said it wd> about 4 a rn after hauling in the last group and he told the judge he didn t know w hat he was going to do next He said I sure do wish you d go horn** and go to bed I haver, t had a wink of sleep all night That s one thing about Nee! his sense of humor said Eelps ■san Antonio district game warden supervisor He was a very dedicated game warden and he is going to be hard to replace lf you nee.itsi something done you could a.way' can Neei and he d do I* He will be missed Etheredge said above ai, he couldn t have had a better partner than the one he had here in Bob Public meetings The New Braunfels Historic Land mark Commission will meet at 2 p rn Wednesday.
