Sports Editor Canyon coach Donna Boehle does nt want to wear the hat of defending district champions tonight She just wanis the Cougarcttes to be themselves Weve got to play like we can play and be said Boehle whose Cougarettes host Boerne today at at Cougar Den It will be more than simply the final game of the first half of district play After tonight only one team will be sit ting atop District 284 A Canyon is 203 on the year Boerne 181 But both are 60 in district play The Greyhounds have one of the taller teams in district and are led by middle blocker Jen Simpson But the real story may take place off the court Boeme is coached by Liana Jack son a former player for Boehle at Canyon and the older sister of Cougarette setter Sara Tyler Boehle said it has always been strange to watch a former player coach ing on the other side of the scorers table I probably feel respect more than anything Boehle said I have a lot of respect for her as a person and as a coach Shes very sincere Ill enjoy being around her again but probably more after the match than The Cougarettes and Greyhounds were playoff teams last year in a dis trict race which went down to the wire Boerne upset Canyon in the last regu lar season match to tie the standings That Canyon loss also eliminated New Braunfels from the playoffs A onematch playoff resulted to determine the district champion Canyon won This year has begun where last sea son left off Both Canyon and Boeme have looked dominating at times But both have had their share of struggles as well The Greyhounds were extended to three games by 15 Clemens Tuesday night However Boehle said the Grey hounds were too talented to follow up an off night with another off night When I saw them earlier this year they looked awfully Boehle said Jeri Simpson is a natural athlete and she hits well from any area of the floor Amy Wilson has been strong for them Canyon boasts enough talent of their own to cause Boeme fits Kirsten Oelk ers has 153 kills and 50 blocks for the season Tyler has 438 assists 45 kills and 26 aces Kristi Welch has 92 kills and 30 aces Courtney Caddell has 45 kills 27 aces 27 assists and 10 blocks Dawn Pantermuehl has 17 aces and Courtney Daffin has 114 kills and 14 aces We have to play one point at a time Boehle said The girls have worked really hard over the last two days Weve had some unbelievable rallies in practice Weve looked really great and I think were New Braunfels Smithson Valley both in action HeraldZeitung photo by JOHN HUSETH Kirsten Oelkers has 153 kills this year and leads the Cougarettes In a District 284A showdown today with 60 Boerne By RICHARD TIJERINA Sports Editor One game separates New Braunfels and Smithson Valley in the district standings and both teams head into the final game of the first half of the district season needing to build momentum New Braunfels 167 33 hosts Clemens 312 15 today at at Unicorn Gym A win over the Buf faloes would give the Unicorns some thing to be led by middle blocker Erin Baetge outside hitters Sarah Bolle and Traci Tuch and setter Rochelle Colvin who has been effec tive in setting up the Unicom offense New Braunfels is coming off a dis appointing 1513 1513 loss at Ker rville Tivy Perry said the key to tonights match will be concentration that the Unicorns will have to beat Clemens as a single unit On the other end of the momentum spectrum Smithson Valley will try for two district wins in a row when it trav els to Alamo Heights today at The Rangerettes led by the domi nating net play of Allyson Kitchel beat Uvalde Tuesday night
