Alamo Heiehts 1 Uvalde 15 at Kerrville Tivy 530 Canyon Boerne put district leads on line By RICHARD TUERINA Sports Editor They say good things come to those who wait Boemc has been waiting for this a whole week Tonights CanyonBoerne matchup has been looked forward to ever since the Greyhounds upset defending district champion New Braunfels last week end Doth Canyon and Boerne are 40 this season With Canyons 337 win over Uvalde last weekend both teams arc 10 in district Boeme coach Hack Holcomb said the key to his teams win over New Braunfels last weekend which was the first time Boerne had ever beaten the Unicorns was that his team showed no fear If they arc to move to 20 in dis trict theyll have to show more of the same tonight Our kids were not in awe of Holcomb said We respected them and knew it would take a great effort to beat them Its going to be like that again this week Canyons got a great football team but were certainly not going to sit back and be in awe of Tonights game may be decided by defense Canyon must defend against the passing combination of Matt Deem and Steve San Miguel who burned the Unicorns last week Miguel finished with two touch downs and 98 yards receiving Canyon will answer with a stingy defense which has been particularly tough on the pass Cornerback Brett Parish has five interceptions this sea son and Danny Ortiz has given the Cougars solid play at the other corner back spot For all of Canyons potential prob lems trying to stop Boerne the Grey hounds inherit the weeks toughest problem in how to stop the Cougar offense Todd Mitchell has rushed for 920 yards and scored 12 touchdowns through four games this season Hes on course for a 30 touchdown season this year So far opponents havent figured out a way to stop the senior running back But the real strength at Canyon may not be Mitchells legs but rather the offensive line he runs behind Canyons front unit led by All Greater San Antonio center Jeremy Schuetz has not only freed Mitchell this year but it has also given quarter back Chip Parrish valuable time to find the open receiver in the Cougars Run andShoot attack Canyon coach Larry Nowotny said HeraldZeitung photo by JOHN HUSETH Boerne will have to find a way to stop running back Todd Mitchell who has rambled for 920 yards and 12 touchdowns this year Both Canyon and Boerne are 40 on the season 10 In District 284A the key to his offensive lines strength is its experience Most of our linemen are Nowotny said Our blocking schemes are basically the same as theyve been the last three years Our linemen just have the experience to Canyon is averaging 467 yards of total offense a game and the passing average is the highest since Nowotny has been at the school On the other side the Canyon defense has allowed only 249 yards per game and has intercepted 11 pass es Parrish has completed 29 passes for 525 yards and five touchdowns Though the CanyonBoeme matchup is the feature game of the week in Dis trict 284A it by no means is the only one Across town New Braunfels 31 01 will try to rebound from an open ing week district loss when it hosts Clemens 3420 losers to Alamo Heights last week The Unicorns actually were in con trol much of the game against Boerne but fell apart in the fourth quarter with numerous turnovers something not familiar to a Lew Simmonds coached team Whats more the Unicorns suffered an even bigger loss when defensive lineman Jordan Walters went down with a hyperextended knee injury in the third quarter Walters was initially diagnosed with the injury and is expected to be out a couple of weeks In his place Victor Gonzales will be expected to pick up the slack Its pretty difficult to replace Jordan Walters if not Simmonds said The New Braunfels running game continues to show flashes of promise The Unicorns are using a threeman rotation much of the game centering around speedy Richard Moya power runner Jesse Foster and Kelly Garza who is a unique blend of both power and speed and has shown the knack for coming up with the big play Quarterback Mike Sierra has led the Unicorns with several second half big plays including a 68yard touchdown pass last week to Albert Gallegos in the fourth quarter which brought New Braunfels to within one touchdown Simmonds said the Unicorns must rebound tonight against the Buffaloes When I saw the film of the Boeme I told the team I wasnt that Simmonds said We had our chances but our effort was good the whole game and thats what you want Our district is wide open but theres a long way to Smithson Valley has looked good this season even though it is rebuilding and regrouping under firstyear coach Larry Hill This week the Rangers travel to Alamo Heights where they will have to defend against the Mules powerful RunandShoot offense Alamo Heights scored 34 points in last weeks win over Clemens The Rangers are led by running back Bryan Wieland who has made a suc cessful transition from comerback to running back this year Still Wieland continues to toil in he defensive backfield along with cor nerback Clinton Hajek who recorded 22 tackles for Smithson Valley in last weeks loss to Uvalde Wieland and Hajek make up one of the most experienced defensive back field combinations in the district but will be sorely tested Friday night against Alamo Heights Weve defended the pass well this Hajek said WeVe been drilling on pass plays theyre most likely to run We did all right against Runand Shoot teams last All three games begin at v v K K K K Fall Silver Sale One full ounce US Eagle silver coin with fancy
