Fire Prevention Month
By: Chief Phil Baker The month of October is Fire Prevention Month in the City of New Braunfels and the Fire Department is ready to spend all of October educating the public about Fre safety. “When in smoke, crawl low”, “If your clothing catches fire. Stop, Drop and Roll”, everyone needs to have “Exit Drills in the Home” (EDITH). Each of these arc sayings that every school kid from 5th grade down should know by heart. Every year New Braunfels Fire
Department plans the annual Fire Prevention program around one of these mottos. This year we are targeting different mottos for each age group and for the seniors in our community, we have smoke detectors. If you arc 60 years old and own your home, we will install the necessary smoke detectors and each year maintain them with new batteries. For all of your Fire Prevention needs come to The New Braunfels Fire Department, 424 S. Casten or call 625-3811.

Texans’ War On Drugs Presents RED RIBBON WEEK 1991 (October 19-27)
What is Red Ribbon Week: HISTORY
This campaign is in memory of the officers who have died in the line of duty. The Red Ribbon campaign was originated when DEA agent Enrique Camerena was murdered by drug traffickers in 1985. The red ribbon became the symbol behind the nation’s war against drugs, just as the yellow ribbon symbolized the hostages and servicemen and women in Iran. Texans’ War on Drugs (TWOD) is proud to sponsor the 1991 Red Ribbon Campaign in the state of Texas. The national campaign is sponsored by the National Federation of Parents.
The purpose of the Texas Red Ribbon Campaign is to present a unified and
visible commitment toward a drug-free Texas. Along with other states, Texas will join the nation in promoting a drug-free America.
The 1991 Texas Red Ribbon Campaign will seek to establish and promote coalitions in support of drug-free lifestyles. These coalitions will include all segments of our communities: schools, parents, youth, religious institutions, business, industry, law enforcement, government, service organizations, media, medical, social services, legislators, elected officials and YOU.
If you have questions or need information please call The Safe City Commission at 625-3425 or come by the office at 424 S. Caste!! Ave.
A SURVIVORS WAY OUT
The thought of a fire in your home can scare even the bravest of us all. It is an occurrence that happens more than any of us would like. A house fire occurs approximately once every minute leaving in their wake almost 5,000 Americans dead and thousands injured each year.
The secret to surviving a fire in your home is to get out quickly. Two things can be done to cut in half the risk of you or one of your family members being killed or injured in a house fire. I. Install and maintain a Smoke Detector in your home. 2. Have an Escape Plan lo get out of your house and practice it.
E.D.I.T.H. ( Exit Drills In The Home) is an excellent way to reduce the possibility of death or injury even in a large house fire. During a fire a process takes place known as incomplete combustion, commonly referred to as smoke. It is during this process that toxic smoke is produced from the articles which are on fire. Several chemicals can be found in smoke, including Carbon Monoxide, a substance that cannot be seen nor smelled. When inhaled by someone it causes them to become disorientated and confused followed shortly by death. A properly operating smoke detector would warn the people of the smoke and give them the critical time needed to get out alive.
E.D.l.T.H. has three different concerns for you to build upon. The first is an escape route. Make a drawing of your home that includes all windows and doors. Make sure that everyone knows how to open all windows and doors. There should be two different escape routes out of each room. It may be necessary for special accommodations to be made for 2 story homes, disabled people, the very young and the very old, etc. After you have completed the drawing of your home and found what the escape routes will be then you must be concerned with the next step. The second concern is where to go and what to do after you have gotten out of
your house. A common meeting place is needed. This is preferably in the front of your house by your mail box, or a neighbors house or a large tree in the yard. These are but a few of the locations that could be used for this meeting place. The main concern here is that everyone goes to the same place. A place that is a safe distance from your home and that everyone can get to. After everyone is out of the house then one person should go to the nearest phone to call the fire department. This information should include the address of the emergency, the type of emergency and a telephone number where the 9 I I dispatcher can call you back if needed. The arriving fire department personnel will need to know if everyone is out of the house or not. This information will aid them in directing their efforts to the rescuing of someone or to putting the fire out only.
The third and final step in developing this plan is to practice it. This is probably the most difficult part to keep up with. There seems to always be something else to do bes ides practice your home fire drill but few are as important. Practice your home fire drill frequently at least twice a year. Or another way is to practice your fire drills is once a year for every birthday that occurs in your family. If you have three children in your home a mother and a father then you would practice your home fire drills 5 times a year. Here are some important points lo remember shout E.D.l.T.H. EXIT DRILLS IN THE HOME
1. Install and maintain Smoke Detectors in your home.
2. Make an Escape Plan to get out of your home safely.
3. Practice your Escape Plan frequently. Remember that tire can strike anywhere at any time. So practice your home fire drills at different limes of the day and
from different location! in your home.
4. Make sure that everyone knows how to open all the doors md windows in the home.
5. If needed make those necessary accommodations for those special people in your home.
6. If the smoke detector goes off, you should assume that there is a fire and GET OUT.
7. Never go through a closed door without feeling it to see if it is hot. If it is hot DO NOT OPEN THE DOOR get out another way
8. If you encounter smoke while getting out REMEMBER THE OLEN AIR IS DOWN THERE. Get close to the floor.
9. REMEMBER this is not a race. The main purpose is to get out as fast as you can but as SAFE as you can.
10. Never go back into the house for any reason once you have gotten out. Remember that if someone is still in the house a trained professional Fire Fighter has the best possible chance to rescue them.
11. Call the Fire Department from a neighbors house. Know how to call the Fire Department and what to say.
12. The Emergency Phone Number in the City of New Braunfels is 9 I I.
So cut your chances in half of you or a family member being killed or hurt in a house fire. E.DJ.T.H. Exit Drills In The Home. A Survivors Way Out
