New Braunfels Herald Zeitung (Newspaper) - November 29, 1996, New Braunfels, Texas Herald-Zeitung g Friday. November 29, 1996 □ 9AChristian women try to duplicate success of Promise Keepers By KAREN TESTA Associated Press Writer LAKE OZARK, Mo. (AP) — Hoping to emulate the success of the Promise Keepers, a coalition of Christian women has begun to carve a path parallel to the one begun in 1990 by their male counterparts. • Known as the Praise Keepers, these women are dedicated to similar ideals as the Promise Keepers — using a commitment to God to restore men and women to their traditional family responsibilities. The idea to form a sort of female counterpart to the men’s group came to Anna Adler about a year ago. She said she saw her husband return on fire from a Promise Keeper convention in Dallas. “It was awesome what God’s doing with men,” recalled Mrs. Adler, 56, of Eldon- “I said, ‘Wouldn’t it be awesome if there was something like this for women?’ ” At the first meeting, 17 women gathered in Barnett, a town of about 250 in central Missouri. Since then, the ministry has found a headquarters in nearby Eldon, membership has grown to more than IOO and its first convention drew nearly 300 to Lake Ozark on Nov. 15. Those numbers certainly don’t compare to the estimated 500,000 men who will attend Promise Keeper conventions this year. But when that Denver-based group was formed six years ago by former Colorado football coach Bill McCartney, its first convention drew only 72 men. “We know that Promise Keepers has really exploded,” said Donna Henley, 58, of Eldon, co-founder of Praise Keepers. “Women’s ministries are always bigger than the men. This will be bigger than the men*s.” The two women were quick to note that they are not trying to mimic or compete with the Promise Keepers. Their mission is to help women serve each other, through the power of prayer. They discuss topics pertinent to women, such as deliverance, how to pray, weight control and how to avoid having an affair. Similar to the Promise Keepers, the Praise Keepers ask their members to make seven commitments — the first is to God, the ‘It was awesome what God’s doing with men. I said, “Wouldn’t it be awesome if there was something like this for women? ” ’ _ — Anna Adler Organizer for Praise Keepers second to their husbands. The role of women is crucial in restoring strong families, said Barbara Holly, 62, a minister in Pineville, N.C., and the keynote speaker at the Praise Keeper convention. “We have a very big role in our families,” Mrs. Holly said. “If the woman is under the authority of their husband — and I don’t mean as a doormat... — then our role is to be the homemaker, to be the prayer warrior, to stand by our husbands.” The Praise Keepers acknowledge their ministry may not be popular with some women who believe it saps independence or t1 »- is not realistic for those who cannot be fulltime homemakers. When asked if Praise Keepers would endorse women quitting their careers to stay at home, Mrs. Henley said women should obey the requests of the Holy Spirit. Mrs. Holly said no woman should become a Praise Keeper if her husband tells her not to. “lf (a husband) forbids, then a woman should sit back and pray ... and be obedient,” she said. “God says obedience is better than sacrifice.” Mrs. Henley and Mrs. Adler are writing a daily devotional and another book about Praise Keepers, and they travel to churches of all Christian denominations to speak about establishing chapters. Already other women are taking the ministry to Texas, California, Michigan and New York, Mrs. Adler said. Finances have been tight, but not a problem, member Laurie Bennett said as she folded Praise Keeper T-shirts for sale at the convention. Women were asked for a $10 donation to attend the conference. “It’s mainly been surprises by God that help us to keep going,” Mrs. Bennett said. “I don’t think we pray for money. We pray for guidance, and the money just happens to be there.” The Women who attended the convention ranged in age from pre-teen to elderly and were dressed in everything from jeans and T-shirts to heels and sequins. Another larger convention is planned for Springfield in February. Because the women’s version of the ministry is so new, many of those who attended the convention were there on a factfinding mission. Shirley Randtke, 70, of Springfield, said she was interested because she believed Promise Keepers to be a godsend for men. She knew little about Praise Keepers before making the 100-mile drive to Lake Ozark. “It’s kind of like the ‘now’ thing,” said the retired nurse, who is studying in the Assemblies of God seminary. “It’s what God’s doing in 1996, and I want to be part of it.” Advertise on our church page, Call 625-9144 Ferguson - Hermes Insurance Agency SINCE 1032 625-4500 MW.
