New Braunfels Herald Zeitung (Newspaper) - November 29, 1991, New Braunfels, Texas Religious Focus Friday, November 29, 1991 Herald-Zeltung, New Braunfels, Texas Page 5 - An open letter Editor’s Note: The Rev. Kenny Wood and his wife Beckie adopted a baby girl, Sarah Elizabeth Wood on Monday, Nov. 25, 1991. tear Sarahbath You arc only one week old today at 2:34. We have known you for five days. We can’t believe you are our little girl. When I close my eyes I can see your face. You are the littlcist person I have ever seen up close (5-pounds 13-ounces, 18 inches). When I hold your head in my right, hand and the rest of you in my left, I feel like a... daddy. I’m a little scared about being your daddy. Can you hear that in my voice when I talk to you. I’m afraid I will do it wrong. You are so perfect, so fresh from the hand of God. You are God’s daughter. Your mother and I want you to grow up knowing that, so deep. You’re arrival was a complete surprise to everyone in our world except God’s. We didn’t know you were coming until you were already here. That’s when we got the phone call. That makes you a Christmas baby to me. Because you came so quietly, with little fanfare or crying. And you have captured our hearts overnight. One thing I’m sure of. You have a wonderful mother. She seems to know what to do naturally, from the heart. She will help mc learn. (In fact. I’m amazed at how many experts I’ve heard from since you were bom). The day you were bom is the day President Kennedy was shot and killed in Dallas 28 years ago. I was in Mrs. McSwain’s Texas history class. I don’t remember what time it happened but I think it was near the time you were bom. You have replaced that sad memory with love. There are so many people I want you to meet. Both sets of grandparents will spoil you with affection. Not to mention all of your aunts, uncles and cousins. And our little church ... you will be their baby too. It is the weekend between Thanksgiving and Christmas. This is always the busiest time of the year. People are running around trying to make Christmas begin. Because of you, Christmas has happened early for your mother and me. I’ve been telling the Christmas story professionally every year for 22 years now. But when I held you in my arms I began to realize for the first time the deepest Truth the world has ever known: That one night long ago and far away God came down the staris of heaven with a Baby in his arms. You are already changing our lives. With love from your Daddy The Rev. Kenny Wood is pastor of Covenant Baptist Church, which meets in the Duck Blind Lounge al Forest Waters Country Club. Gospel artist is singing for sinners, not saints By UNDA BYRNE Tha Kerrville Dally Timee KERRVILLE, Texas (AP) — One of the names Del Way is considering for his fifth gospel album is “You’ll Never Be the Same.’’ It’s a fitting title, coming from a man who went from being a “honky-tonk bum” to head of a 500-member church he started under an oak tree. Way recently has been cutting his fifth gospel album in Nashville. His son Josh, 8, has a part in one of the songs Way wrote. “I pray late at night, when everybody’s in bed and it’s quiet,” Way explained. “One night, I was praying for all the children who have come up to me and begged, ‘Brother Del, pray for my daddy, that he’ll come to church.’ I think it’s such a tragedy that little children have to lead the parents; there’s nothing more heartbreaking for mc. One day, it’s going to be too late for these daddies. So as I was praying, a song came to me, and I wrote it in about IO minutes.” That’s the song that has a speaking part for a small child, and Josh came to mind. But Way and his wife, Cindy, didn’t tell the youngster he’d be going to Nashville until just ahead of time. “We didn’t want him to get nervous,” Way explained. Anxiety isn’t one of the traits that seems to run in the Way genes. Way is an enthusiastic, if somewhat down-home, cheerleader for the Gospel. “I’m singing to the sinners, not the saints,” he explained, adding that he has personal experience with the “sinner role.” “I was livin’ in honky tonks, out on the dance floor every night. If I wasn’t an alcoholic I was definitely as close as you can get to being one. Never did the world offer me anything. When I started serving Jesus, my dreams started coming true.” Way said he began his Kerrville ministry five years ago. The oak tree has long since been abandoned; the growing congregation has worshipped in several locations and now is preparing to build a permanent home on the outskirts of town. “We’re building the church debt-free. All the profits from my albums go toward the building fund,” Way explained.Religion in briefMemorial Service Hospice New Braunfels invites the public to the sixth annual Memorial Service at 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec.
