The city of New Braunfels received a $268,008 sales tax rebate check from the state for taxes collected in September 1991, according to figures released by State Comptroller John Sharp.
This figure refleas an increase of 8.1 percent over the $247,921 collected during the same month last year in New Braunfels. Year-to-date city sales tax collections are continuing to run ahead of last year at a 2.43 percent rate.
Comal County has received $151,619 for September, an increase of 10.53 percent over the $137,181 received in September of 1990, according to the Comptroller’s Office.
Comal County’s year-to-date total of $1.4 million is an increase of 8.5 percent over last year at this time.
This month’s payments include taxes collected on September sales and reported in October by businesses filing monthly returns. Also included are taxes reported by businesses filing quarterly returns for sales made in
July, August and September.
San Antonio’s payment for $7.4 million was the third largest in the state in September for a year-to-date sum of $65.7 million. San Antonio sales tax payments are running seven percent ahead of last year.
“(Statewide), local sales tax rebates to Texas cities and counties are running $123 million or 10.6 percent ahead of total payments this time last year,” Sharp said.
Payments to counties are up in part this year because five more counties have started collecting the sales tax since this time last year, and one additional county has raised its sales tax rate since last November, Sharp said.
Shoppers pay the local sales taxes of up to two percent along with the 6.25 percent state sales tax when they make a taxable purchase. Merchants then send in the taxes to the Comptroller’s Officer with their tax returns. The state keeps its share and returns to cities, counties and other taxing entities their local portion of the sales tax.
