New Braunfels Herald Zeitung (Newspaper) - November 28, 1997, New Braunfels, Texas Herald-Zettunq Q Friday, November 28,1997 Q 7A t adored my Gmdtaotfecr Brooks. She is the woman I hive attempted to emulate. I spent a lot of time with her as I was growing up. After I went off to college, I would go to Elba and qwnd a couple of weeks with her in the summer. One particular summer, I had completed my junior year at the University of Alabama. It was the summer of 1960, and Grandmama at that time was well into her 70s. One morning we were sitting in die front potch swing; I was studying her dux. She was beautiful. Her gray hair was piled on top of her head, she had just a touch of rouge on and “natural” lipstick. The lines in her face reflected peace and serenity. I never recall her raising her voice to her grandchildren or fussing in any way. As I marveled at those sweet lines in her face, I thought to myself, “She can look like that because she’s never had to worry about anything. She’s never lacked for anything.” My grandfather was a pharmacist and owned the only drug store there. he also owned three of the four blocks on the square plus other real estate. As I was mulling this over, my uncle Lewis pulled up in front of die house with several of his cronies in tow. on grandma’sface nn * Brooks Krumnow He got out of the car and started demanding his allowance for the month. Uncle Lewis had had scarlet fever when he was about five, and as a result of the high fever had been mildly retarded since. He was now in his 60s, drove the garbage truck in Elba and got a small monthly stipend from Grandmama. She explained to him that he had already received his allowance for that month. He pitched a fit right in the front yard and started yelling obscenities at her. I got up out of the swing and told him in no uncertain terms that he would not speak to her like that. She stuck to her guns, got him settled down and on his way. I looked at her with eyes a little wider and reviewed what I now knew of her life: she had married Papa against her parents' wishes. After Uncle Lewis came a beautiful little girl named Catherine. When Catherine was about 18 months old, she had a mosquito bite that got infected. With no penicillin available yet, Catherine died. My Daddy was bom three years later. Daddy was brilliant, headstrong and spoiled rotten. He turned down a Harvard scholarship at die height of the Depression. Eleven years after Daddy, Uncle Joe was bom. He was equally smart and wild. He drove Harleys, wrecked cars and flunked out of Annapolis. My grandfather made a suicide attempt when I was about 4 years old, and from that time till he died, he was bed-ridden. And I had thought she had a cushy life! What made her different? What made her sweet instead of an embittered, mean old lady? She was grateful. She counted her blessings. She dwelled on the good. And she set a wonderful example for a 20-year-old girl who was about to enter her life of alcoholism, divorce and heavy responsibility. When times get tough, the tough get going. What makes us beautiful, serene lines on our faces when we’re old and gray? It’s by practicing what Paul said: “Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue and if there be any praise, dunk on these things.” (Ptiillippians 4:8) (The Rev.
