Courthouse renovation on schedule
Comal officials are pleased with the quality of project
By Greg Bowen
The Herald-Zeifung The restoration of the historic (Cornell C'ounty Courthouse is on schedule, on budget - and is being beautifully done.
"It's really been a [pleasure to work on this," County Engineer Tom Hornseth said. Hornseth updated county commissioners Thursday evening on the $8.6 million restoration, vvhu h will result in a completely modernizefj building rc'slored to its original 1«‘)«look.
Restoration of the old courthouse, dc'signed by noted Texas courthouse architect |. Riely Gordon, b(‘gan last tall.
RHR (Onstru( tion of Weatherford, working with restoration experts from the Texas Historical Commission and with county offi-c iais, have demolish(,*d st'v-eral non-original additions, ar(' making i'Xtensive interior r(‘novations and doing in-dc'pth on-site historical investigation to erisure that original flooring, fixtures and ÎLirnitiiri' — or acc urate reproductions — are used, Hornseth said workers ha\(' uncovered, beneath “So or W) layers ot paint," the c ourthouse's original int(‘rior paint st heme, which the\ II match.
Th(‘y've also uncovered the original wood flooring, whi( h they'll refurt)ish and reinstall; and the original tile, which they're removing, numl)ering and will c aretully rc'place.
"The wood flooring is good and solid and really looks grc'at. It's got a lot of character, with gouges and niiirs," Hornseth said.
They've examined picture’s taken inside the court-rtXirn in the 1920s in which the wood floors are covered with a luirlap material, presumably to reduce noise, Hornseth said. Restoration arc hitc^cts are asking c ounty otficials if they want to rc'create that look or leave the wood tiooring uncov-erc'd.
