Expanded services Triumphant Lutheran Church of Northeast San Antonio has added a weekly Wednesday evening worship service at 7:30 pin. to accommodate those persons who are unable to attend Sunday morning worship and for those that appreciate a mid-week choice of services. Triumphant Lutheran Church is located North of Loop 1604 and south of Farm-to-Market 3009 on Bat Cave Road at Schoenthal Road. McQueeney resident elected trustee McQueeney resident Robert E. Kingston Jr., president of Kingston Manufacturing Co., was elected to the board of trustees of Baptist Memorials Geriatric Center in San Angelo during the annual meeting of the 2.5 million-member Baptist General Convention of Texas in Waco Nov. 11-12. Texas Baptist institutions, financially supported by more than 5,400 congregations, include eight universities, two academies, Hispanic Baptist Theological Seminary in San Antonio, and seven hospitals, children’s homes and homes for the aging in multiple locations throughout the state. Chance meetings A new heart By THE REV. KENNY WOOD It is already this morning. Nearly I o'clock on Friday morning. Here we are, the Lonnie Curtis Fan Club, meeting in the blue waiting room on the second floor of Medical Center Hospital. You probably know that Lonnie is down the hall getting a new hem right now. This is as close to a sure enough big miracle as I’ve ever been. A new heart! They say Lonnie is getting a bigger hem. I can’t imagine that. Just listen to the people who know him. They will tell you there’s not a bigger hem anywhere. Even if this one comes from Waco. I grew 14) believing that we think with our head ami we feel with our hem. I have stood back and listened to Lonnie for a while now and have come to believe he thinks with his hem too. His eyes give him away. It starts with a sparkle like he just- remembered a joke he’s about to tell. But it’s no joke. He’s serious. Then the smile begins. Slowly. It’s almost shy. Finally, he speaks. He makes the ordinary extraordinary. The man is a child too. He is naturally curious; and curiously natural. When I walked into his room yesterday afternoon at the hospital he smiled like a 5-year-old boy standing on the bottom stair on Christmas morning. I heard that Lonnie has been living on IO percent of his hem. What I’m trying to picture on this early Friday morning is Lonnie Curtis at IOO percent. Pray for Dorothy. The Rev. Kenny Wood ic pastor of Covenant Baptist Church, which mens in the Duck Blind Lounge al Forest Waters Country Chib. PRINCETON, NJ. (AP) — Average weekly U.S. attendance at worship has risen from IOO million to 107 million in the 12 months since a national "Invite a Friend** program was launched by Religion In American Life, the group says. Nicholas B. van Dyck, president of RIAL, said the figure represented projections of findings in Oallup polls, showing weekly attendance up from 40 percent to 43 percent of the population. RIAL, an interfaith organization that works to strengthen the country’s religious heritage, promotes its "Invite a Friend” drive through public service prim and broadcast ads developed free by the Advertising Council. A guide is available to congregations from RIAL offices here to help them participate. The 10-year campaign seeks to boost weekly attendance to 200 million by the century’s end. • • • DALLAS (AP) — The Rev. Paige Patterson, a key strategist in the fundamentalist rise to Southern Baptist dominance, was reinstated as president of Criswell College here, a week after he was fired. After fundamentalist leaders and students rallied to his support, the college trustees who earlier had dismissed him for spending too much time in church politicking, reversed themselves. “We just prayed and came together in the Spirit of the Lord,” said the Rev. Adrian Rogers, three-term Southern Baptist president whose 1979 election to that post began a 12-year string of victories by biblical fundamentalists. •    •    • LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — A majority of clergy of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) say God always answers prayers,    but    less    than half of members    think    so,    according    to    a denominational survey. Almost all members and clergy say they pray often or regularly. •    •    • WASHINGTON (AP) — The head of the U.S. Catholic bishops’ international policy committee has urged Congress to tighten restrictions on U.S. military aid to El Salvador. Archbishop John R. Roach of Minneapolis-Si. Paul, Mum., said further cutting bade of such aid would help the peace process mediated there by the United Nations. NEW YORK (AP) — The interfaith satellite network, VISN, whose programs emphasize ethics, cultural values and faith, says it has passed the IO million-mark in households reached. With the adding of 12 additional cable systems, including those in Louisville, Ky.; Charlotte, N.C.; Rochester, N.Y., and Birmingham, Ala., the network president. Nelson Price, said it is now carried on 672 systems. He said this raises total distribution to 10.3 million subscribers. The 24-hour network is operated by a consortium of 54 denominations and faith groups. “When viewers tune in to VISN far the first time, they will gain deeper undemanding and appreciation of the diverse roles than faith plays in American life,” Price says.
