New Braunfels Herald Zeitung (Newspaper) - November 15, 1983, New Braunfels, Texas Marmaduke Study disputes link between disease, personality New Braunfels Herald-Zeitung "Please remind him that he's your best friend!’* ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) - Heart attack victims with hard-driving personalities are no more likely than low-key people to suffer second attacks or other coronary problems, a researcher says. Dr. Robert B. Case, a professor of medicine at Columbia University in New York, said Monday that based on his research, he sees “absolutely no reason to change Type A (compulsive) behavior” as a means of reducing the chance of further heart disease among such patients. “I’m not saying Type A is out” as an indicator of a person’s risk of heart disease, he cautioned, but simply that his study “raises some questions” about the concept. Previous studies have linked Type A personalities to an increased chance of heart disease and death, as well as to heart disease risk factors such as cigarette smoking, high blood pressure and high blood cholesterol levels, Case noted. In Case’s study, 545 heart attack patients were asked to fill out a detailed questionnaire that is generally accepted as a means of identifying Type A personalities — people he described as having “a strong sense of pressure, a work compulsion, intense competitive tendencies ... (and) free-floating hostility.” Case, who presented his findings at the American Heart Association’s annual scientific meeting, had expected his study to show that the heart attack victims with Type A personalities would be more likely to die or suffer second heart attacks, heart damage, irregular heart rhythms or reduced heart efficiency. “We analyzed everything backward and forward and simply couldn’t find any relation” between those post-heart attack ailments and Type A personality, he said. “It was a surprise.” Crossword ACROSS 5 Caption to M*rgar<**r 14 japan*** baa* 15 A Bat'ymora 16 Ticker — IT in,a* adad 16 Ripening agent 20 Trap 21 Comp pl 22 Genu id Strongbox#* 2$ Hmd Ot *OuP 26 Tram* JO Remove JI /an, JA Otto*ant J6 Garment* 36 Alan tom 36 Certain tomtit* 42 — Ta. 43 Corridor 44 — Part Coto 45 Repo*** 4? Jesse Jackson is a “showman, a demogogue and an opportunist,” but that the Democratic presidential candidate may bring some reality to a “stuffy, stifling campaign.” “Jesse will infuriate us and he will demagogue and shuffle and hustle a bit,” Albert Vorspan told the American Hebrew Congregations' biennial convention Monday night. “But he may just help to expose the American people to the real world and the real conditions of our cities, our minority families, our children, our youth, our elderly, our future.” Vorspan, vice president of the 1.25 million-member organizaton, said Jackson's candidacy “stirs deep and justifiable concern among thoughtful Jews. Yet we had better recognize that Jesse Jackson may bring some reality and drama into this stuffy and stifling campaign." If Jackson articulates “the pain in the streets and the desperation" of minorities who feel outcase by society, Vorspan said, "America will gain even though Jesse loses.” Jackson, a black civil rights leader who recently announced his candidacy for the Democratic presidential nomination, is opposed by many Jews because he favors an independent Palestinian state and because in 1979 he publicly hugged Palestine Uberation Organization leader Yasser Arafat.
