New Braunfels Herald Zeitung (Newspaper) - November 12, 1995, New Braunfels, Texas Herald-Zeitung □ Sunday, November 12,1995 OSA L E I t b' R SSmoking cast cloud over Wurstfost Dear Editor, We attended this year’s Wurstfest on opening night and enjoyed the “sausage biting,” the great food, and visiting with friends and neighbors. Wurstfest preserves many great German traditions...however, one of those which SHOULD NOT be maintained is to allow smoking in the food hall, the Wursthalle, and the music tents. This is touted as a family festival and smoking was everywhere—even pipes and cigars were permitted in the Wursthalle and ashtrays were on every table. No effort was made to even provide a smoke-free section. There are convenient outdoor areas where people can smoke, including picnic tables. We urge the Wurstfest Association to change this particular German “tradition” for next year’s celebration. Sincerely, Carol and Richard Glenville New BraunfelsZhirinovsky frighteningly similar to Hitler Dear Editor, The latest antics of the Russian politician Zhirinovsky remind us of the eerie similarity between him and the late Nazi leader. Both men came out of obscurity. Both wrote of an unhappy, troubled childhood. Hitler was anti-Semitic, so is Zhirinovsky. Hitler came to power through die democratic process. Barring a successful assassination attempt, the overwhelming likelihood is that Zhirinovsky will win the 1996 Russian presidential election. - Indeed, the situation in Russia today is reminiscent of conditions in Weimar, Germany prior to Hitler’s coming to power—chaos, disillusionment and despair. These are the conditions ripe for a dictatorship. Hider had an electrifying effect on the German people unmatched by any other politician. The same can be said of Zhirinovsky among Russians. Before and after Hider came to power, the international press ridiculed him as a clown and a madman. The international press today tend to dismiss Zhirinovsky as “the clown prince," a “political jester,” “buffoon,” etc.—much as they reacted to Hitler. This will prove to be a great mistake. Zhiri novsky is a man of destiny. His rise and Bdl (“upon the mountains of Israel”) are foretold in die Biblical book of Ezekiel, chapters 38 and 39. He is described as “Gog, the prince of Rosh, Meshech, and Tubal” NKJV (now Russia, Moscow and Tubolsk). Vladimir Wol-fovich Zhirinovsky—the man who would be “Gog”! ELV. Barrett Guelph, Ontario, CanadaNo problems hero with Wurstfest Dear Editor, I have returned from my first Wurstfest adventure and it was wonderful! I can not remember the last time I laughed, ate and danced as much as I did this last weekend— and loved every single minute! You have a beautiful community with many lovely, talented, hospitable representatives of your area. The costumes were just gorgeous; the exhibits, crafts and customs were most interesting and well presented The music was lively and fun as were your city’s hosts and the patrons of Wurstfest. I saw a number of law enforcement officials but not even a hint of trouble. I just wanted to applaud your citizens, praise their energy, efforts and gracious hospitality. I did mention this was my first journey through Wurstfest; there will be many more.... Thankyou, Patti Cooper Corsicana, TexasEven a tourist can figure out one lane of traffic Dear Editor, Our town is experiencing “growing pains” and providing safe traffic flow must be a primary function of our city government. Most residents are knowledgeable about driving safely around the downtown Plaza. They form a single lane of traffic, use their turn indicators and never cut in front of others to go from the inside lane into one of die exit streets that radiate from the Plaza. But, because some visitors don’t drive by these rules of common sense and common courtesy, we’ve all had some near misses making our way around this lovely spot. And we do have lots of visitors. This problem can be eliminated by having cars form one lane of traffic in the block before they reach the Plaza and by blocking the inside lane around it permanently. That this really works is clearly proven when workmen’s trucks block that inside lane. There are two other spots that need to be controlled—the intersection of Walnut and Kerlick streets, and the intersection of Walnut and W. San Antonio streets. Keilick at Walnut is the entrance and exit for a number of residents and for traffic going to and from a school as well. In addition, it is adjacent to the entrance and exit to Kirkwood Nursing Home, used by many people—young and old. And for those who use the intersection of Walnut and Ohio streets, an area that is developing rapidly both commercially and residentially. The intersection of Walnut and W. San Antonio streets is very busy and is in dire need of a controlled left turn signal light. We all want to live in a city that is safe and traffic safety is becoming a larger and more dangerous problem every day. Let’s insist that these danger spots be controlled right away.
