Construction to begin this month on new pavilion at Eden Home
Eden Home residents will soon be able to enjoy a beautiful and spacious new Eden Family Pavilion. The construction will start this month. This is the culmination of a dream of many of the Villagers and Village staff. The Rev. Paul Lee, Mattie Howard and other Villagers visualized a shelter over 8 years ago. As financial resources began to build in a special project fund of the Village, the idea began to grow. Betty Doeppenschmidt, director of development, Dorothy Koenig, Village coordinator, and Don Moore, maintenance supervisor, all shared this dream. In 1994, the Village Council (composed of residents of the Village) * voted to use the project funds for the construction of the pavilion and this action was endorsed by a large majority of the Villagers.
Working on the development of plans were the executive director of Eden Home, Inc., Mr. Howard Pin-nell, Betty Doeppenschmidt, and the Rev. Bob McPherson, Village resident and council member. The project was
drawn up and presented to the Eden Home board, which approved the basic plan early this year.At its last board meeting in October, the board voted enthusiastically to accept the proposal from Richard Yeatts, general contractor, of New Braunfels. Work will begin the week after Thanksgiving.
Over three-fourths of the money necessary to build and equip the building has been received. The Rev. Courtney Swander, another Village resident, has accepted the position of fund chairman and will be visiting other Villagers throughout November to raise the balance of the funds.
Friends of Eden who would like to support this venture by funding tables, benches, lights or fans, etc., please contact Betty Doeppenschmidt at 210-625-6291, ext. 246.
The pavilion will be located in the northeast comer of the Village Park, located in such a way as to blend with the natural surroundings. The 20’ X 40’ shelter will resemble the design of the main entryway to the Home, with

brick columns, metal roof and beamed construction. A 20’ X 20’ open area will adjoin the structure. It will be handicapped-accessible and special tables will be built for wheelchaired residents.
The facility will be used by all Eden residents: those living in the condominiums and cottages, Eden Heights and Eden Nursing Home residents,
their families and the Eden Home staff. It will provide a place for outings with friends and family, potluck picnics, reunions, outdoor worship and other social activities. Groundbreaking ceremonies are tentatively scheduled to be held at 3:30 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 26 and it is hoped a dedication of the facility will be the first week of January, 1996.
