New Braunfels Herald Zeitung (Newspaper) - November 8, 1995, New Braunfels, Texas Herald-Zeitung O Wednesday, November 8,1995 □ 3 ATexas BriefsVote Dips to Single-Digits AUSTIN (AP) — Turnout in the latest constitutional amendment vote fell into single-digits, but the state’s chief elections officer found one bit of good news anyway. About 739,000 of the state’s 9.4 million voters bothered to cast ballots Tuesday — a rate of about 7.86 percent. That’s the lowest since 7.5 percent turnout in 1979, Secretary of State Tony Garza said. But Garza said he did find encouragement in the increase in voter registration. “We brought on three-quarters of a million new registered voters in the state this year,” Garza said early today. “We’ve addressed half the equation. Our registration is nearly 70 percent. That’s something we can be proud of.” Garza and other officials who pushed for approval of several of the 14 amendments decided Tuesday said they saw several reasons for the low voter participation.Appeals Court Reverses Vacating Verdict Against Evangelist DALLAS (AP) — A decision that vacated a $1.5 million jury verdict against evangelist Robert Tilton and his wife has been vacated by a federal appeals court. Reached at home Tuesday night, Ms. Byrd said she did not have exact figures at her disposal, but that the Tiltons’ share of the $1.5 million judgment was “nominal.” In 1994, the jury awarded Mike and Vivian Elliott of Tampa, Fla., $500,000 in actual damages and $1 million in punitive damages in their fraud lawsuit. The lawsuit named Tilton, his former wife Marte, and his suburban Dallas church.Stores Pull Tabloids with Selena Autopsy Photos South Texas retailers quickly yanked copies of the Globe from store shelves after discovering the tabloid had printed photos from Tejano star Selena’s autopsy. Six color pictures snapped by a police photographer from the autopsy of 23-year-old Selena Quintanilla-Perez were in the Nov. 14 issue delivered to local stores Tuesday morning. “After reviewing the contents, the decision was made to pull the magazine from all our stores,” said Mike De La Garza, spokesman for the H-E-B grocery chain of 220 stores. Officials of Maverick Market and Circle K stores also said managers were told to pull the publication from store shelves Tuesday afternoon. “It’s just in consideration for the family,” said Brian Mitchell, a spokesman for Coastal Corp. in Houston, which owns Maverick Market. The company has 120 stores in South Texas.Lanier Wins Third Term HOUSTON (AP) — Mayor Bob Lanier has set records with two overwhelming election wins and now makes history by becoming the city’s first lame duck mayor. Thanks to term limits enacted since he first won election in 1991, Lanier’s landslide victory Tuesday over two little-known and little-financed challengers was his last. “Tonight’s kind of an emotional night for us,” Lanier, 70, told supporters at a victory party. “This is the last campaign we’ll go through.” I rn 13' European Pine Tree OUR REO.
