Sincerely, Marsha Orr, NBHS Lena Davis, CHS Susie Bass, SVHS Sleazy politics Dear Editor: We hear much about sleazy politics, but until Monday night’s city council meeting, May 24 1993, this writer had never seen it in action. Now it is most obvious what the terminology means. Certain members of the council chose to ignore the opinion of the paid city attorney's advice. This was a most blatant move on their part to avoid a decision that was not in keeping with the special interests they represent. Our mayor pro tem has seen fit to seek outside legal advice because he “does not agree with the city attorney”. If the city attorney cannot be relied upon for legal advice he should be removed. However, we all in attendence at this meeting could see this was a poorly orchestrated ploy on the part of the mayor pro tem, backed by two other council members, to avoid representing the true interests of city voters. The most disheartening episode of the evening was to witness the actions of one new council member. We, who had supported and voted for her in the recent election and had the high hopes of integrity, good judgement, leadership and lack of partisanship that she professed during her campaign, then to see her join in the sleaziness by walking out of city council meeting she had been elected to serve on. Jan we expected more of you....while these three council members walked out to avoid accepting their responsibilities, the citizens, business people, and others must suffer for lack of city council action. In summary, we see a few disgruntled people who lost the recent election and now in a most vindictive way are trying in every way possible to disrupt the city business by injunctions and other ploys under the guise of concerned citizens. This is the most obvious and shoddy attempt of all and the council members must be called to task for this and made to accept their responsibilities or answer to the voters. GJS. Stevenson New Braunfels Opportunity for Texas Dear Editor: The Texas Legislature is currently considering legislation which would help move Texas into the 21st Centuiy and create new jobs. Senate Bill 498 will help make the Texas telecommunications network world-class while improving both health care and educational opportunities. Here's what the key provisions of the bill entail: — A freeze of local telephone rates for two years —rates which are already a bargain. In fact, local telephone rates in Texas are 25 percent below the national average. — Provide at least $250 million in increased infrastructure investment to be earmarked for public schools and hospitals. This increased investment would bring fiber-optic technology which would benefit public education and the health care industry. — Increase the opportunity for the creation of thousands of new jobs in Texas. — Adopting an accounting approach which allows utilities to compute their taxes on the earnings of the regulated utility and not on their gains or losse of totally seperate affiliated companies - This tax treatment is consistent with 47 other states and two federal agenes des. Senate Bill 498 makes the choice to move forward seem so obvious. The potential for the creation of new jobs, increased opportunity for schools and hospitals and continued affordable local rates will result if the bill is Passed. Let’s move Texas forward and pass Senate Bill 498. Timothy Tippit Area Manager-External Affairs Southwestern Bell Telephone Dear Editor Frankly I don’t think the voters of Texas fully realize what is at stake in the current race for the U S Senate. In the coming election we have two fine and fully qualified candidates presenting themselves to the voters. They are not the problem. The problem is that if we send another Republican to the Senate during a Democratic Presidential Administration we will loose a valuable line of communication with the White House not to men tion the raw fact that we will slap a fellow Southwesterner in the face during his first year as President. At least we have a president from our part of the country who just happens to have a vision that should be given every chance to develop. My concern Is that if we send the second Republican to the Senate, Texas will be relegated to the political “Broom Closet- for the balance of this Presi- See LETTER, Page 13A 5 HBO's No Small Print I +basics i $47.50/mo.
