New Braunfels Herald Zeitung (Newspaper) - May 29, 1997, New Braunfels, Texas Herald - Z e i t u n gEducation NBISD NBHS freshman chosen for SWTSU program New Braunfels High School freshman Angela Saad has been accepted to the 1997 Southwest Texas State University Honors Summer Math Camp. She will receive a full scholarship from the National Science Foundation Young Scholars Program to attend the camp. In addition to attending the camp, Angela will also complete an inter-vening-year project at New Braunfels High School. The intent of the project is for Angela to build upon the mathematical skills she learns this summer. Angela was recommended by NBHS Math Department Head Bonnie Leitch.Fitsko to present at state conference OakRun School Principal Mike Fitsko was invited by the Texas Asso ciation of Secondary School Principals to present at the TAASP Summer Workshop in Austin on June 11-13. Fitsko will present to principals from across the state on the importance of putting students first in the school decision-making process, as well as making quality teacher selections and how best to hire exceptional educators. This is his third time to present at this stale conference. TAMU scholarship prefers NBHS grads New Braunfels High School band director Beth Bronk, left, accepts a book from Roberta P. Mueller, seated. The book, The Fightin’ Texas Aggie Band,” was autographed by its author, Donald B. Powell. The book was donated on behalf of Jim Ogletree, NBHS and Texas A&M graduate. Ogletree also established the H.D. Gruene Cadet Corps Scholarship in honor of H.D. Gruene, onetime Chisolm Trail drover, founder of Gruene, and Ogletree’s grandfather. The scholarship, endowed in three parts for the band, the corps and the Parsons Cavalry, is eligible to high school graduates across the state. However, New Braunfels and Comal area seniors are given preference in consideration. Recently, the NBHS band swept all the awards at the “Big D” music classic. Also, in their first year in 5A competition, the band earned sweepstakes in the University Interscholastic League competition. This is the fifth consecutive year for the band to take sweepstakes. The national honor unit hosted the 18th annual awards banquet Friday, May 9. At that time, a number of state, national and unit awards were presented.The following cadets earned honors: Lt. Col. April Luna: Outstanding Cadet Award, Officer Leadership Award, SA Marine Corps Recruiting Station Iwo Jima Award, Women Marine’s Association Award for Outstanding Female Cadet, Top Female Marksman Trophy, and Drill Commander’s Trophy. Cpl. Rosa Espinosa: Top Female Physical Fitness Trophy, and Student Leadership Award. Sgt. Dustin Wagy: VFW Post #7110 Leadership Medal, Top Male Physical Fitness Trophy. Maj. Allison Ott: Marine Corps Assicaiotn honor Graduate Award, Daughters of the American Revolution JROTC Bronze Medal. Maj. NatliaeGoff: Sons of the American Revoluttion Leadership Award. 2nd Lt. Martial Cadena: Fleet Reserve Association Award, and the Military Order of World Wars Bronze Medal of Merit. Capt. Andrew Koehler: Drill Team Commander Award, American Legion Post #179 Bronze Medal for Military Excellence, Military Order of World Wars Gen. Simpson Award, and Top Male Rifle Marksman Trophy. He was also named the new nbattalion commander for the 1997-98 school year. Cpl. David Zartman: Semper Fidelis Award, presented by the Alamo Unit Marine Corps League; Student Leadership Award, VFW Post# 11050 Leadership Award, ;and the American Legion Post #179 Bronze Medal tor !Scholastic Excellence. The following earned Graduate Drill Instructor Awards: Maj. Natalie Goff, Staff Sgt. Robert Villarreal, Gunnery Sgt. Donnie Hite, Lance Cpl. Laura Lopez and Staff Sgt. Esther Cruz. The Best Drill Platoon Award went to the First Platoon, “A” Company, led by 2nd Lt. Michael Lin. Honors for the Best Inspected Platoon went to Second Platoon "B” Company, led by Gunnery Sgt. Andrew ! At right, Erica Erben, Carrie Allen and Kristi Kirmse seat native plants in their new home at the middle school. Langley’s classes landscaped near the school’s entrance and by the band hall. Controlling erosion and finding drought-tolerant plants were part of the students research. They prepared the soil and planted the flowers, bushes and ground covers.
