Council to welcome new members Monday
council was still bound by it.
They could quibble about the cost and method of construction, but the work has been under way for almost a week.
Regardless of when the contract was signed, Laird said she felt the city had a stake in the courts because of the number of citizens using them after school hours.
“I don't have an exact way to know how many people are using the courts, but based on the revenue from the lights, it’s quite a few,” she said.
The city currently maintains and pays for the electricity for the courts’ four lights, which run on quarters inserted by players.
Each 25-cent deposit generates roughly eight minutes of lighted play time.
With roughly $2,000 per

year coming into the city coffers from the lights, Laird estimated nonschool-related tennis players occupied the courts for at least 133 hours per year.
“And that’s just during the times when its dark. I bet a lot more people play during the day than at night,” she said.
The city does have its own courts at Prince Solms Park, constructed in 1990, but Laird said the two tennis locations were used by different people, depending on their residential location.
“Each set of courts serve different parts of town,” she said.
“People use what’s closest to them.”
Tennis players used to holding matches at the high school will have to use the Prince Solms courts for at least two months — the NBIIS courts will be unavailable for the duration of the resurfacing project, until Aug. I
In other business, council will:
■ Bid farewell to three members — Lee Rodriguez, Ken Valentine and Adam Cork — and welcome three new members — District 5 Councilwoman Kathleen Krueger, District 6 Councilwoman Lynn Limmer and Mayor Bruce Boyer. Once the new members have taken their oaths of office, the council will elect a new mayor pro tem.
■ Consider approving a long-range plan for the New Braunfels Public Library.
■ Consider approving two new positions for the parks department to assist with river cleanup during the 2005 season.
■ Consider authorizing the city manager to enter into a contract for the miniature train concession in Landa Park.
■ Consider amending the parks budget to pay for improvements and repairs to the putt-putt golf course and Landa Hails.

Parents line up to cheer on their children
Parents could be in the racing area for advice and guidance, but they weren’t allowed to touch their children once the race began.
There were two forms of coaching: One from in front, with the parent coaxing the child ahead—sometimes with a toy — and the other from behind, with the parent exhorting tile child to run.
Erie Fortner chose the latter course — until it became time to shoot the race video.
I Ie started by pointing the way and whispering to Jack where he had to go and how fast he had to get there.
Jack looked around at the crowd, which bore in on the roped-in area to a depth of IO to 12 people.
The race began, and when Erie Fortner moved to the side

of the course where he would shoot video, Jack stopped in mid-course as thougJi to pose for the picture.
Dad could have cared less.
“He just kind of wandered around and walked off the track,” Fortner said. "He thougtit the people on tile side

Sam Vrana applied himself more directly to the task at hand and managed a second-place showing.
“Its great,” Fortner said. “We just get all the kids together for a good time — and to support the community hospital.”CALL 1-866-CINGULAR • CLICK WWW.CINGULAR.COM • C’MON IN TO A STORE
