City governmentFire department requirements have changed since founding

The New Braunfels Fire Department was established in 1886 as a Volunteer Fire Department. The membership requirements were not very stringent and prior education was not a primary consideration.
Over the years, the requirements have changed considerably. The ability to think, evaluate and make decisions are at the top of the list. Education, both formal and informal, are a necessity. The ability to communicate on an individual basis and to a large group is a standard. The Fire service, in general, is becoming more professional. The establishment of the State Commission on Fire Protection Personnel Standards and Education in 1978 was the beginning of professionalism in Texas.
The commission began by setting standards for protective clothing. The use of flammable protective clothing was prohibited in paid departments. As the years have gone by, the commission has continued to set the standard by which we live. One of the several standards is the level of certification for Firefighters. It begins at the basic firefighter level, and, as experience is gained, increases to intermediate, advanced, and master firefighter. The New Braunfels Fire Department has 13 master firefighters and six advanced firefighters. The remaining 36 are basic firefighters.
The commission also sets standards for training of firefighters. Each fire department that conducts recruit training is inspected and certified by the commission. Also, all specialized training for fire inspector, fire investigator, crash/fire/rescue specialist, etc., is certified through the commission. The city of New Braunfels now has personnel certified in all except crash/ fire/rescue.
Although the New Braunfels Fire Department is no longer certified for recruit training, many training schools are held here. Swift water rescue, high angle rescue, incident command, and auto extrication classes are conducted by city personnel.
With the classes held in New Braunfels, a major deficiency is the lack of a quality classroom. The apparatus rooms in various stations are used for large classes and the living quarters for smaller classes. There are plans to remodel the upstairs of the Old Central Station, but the city has been unable to budget the necessary funds for the project. In the interim, the department will continue to conduct quality classes with the facilities available.
In the modem New Braunfels Fire Department, becoming a member is much different from 1886, but the goal of saving life and propeny is the same now as it was for the early volunteer firefighter. Equipment and technology have changed, but the dedication is the same. The fire department is here to serve the citizens of New Braunfels and make the community a better place to live and

New Braunfels as a community encountered the concept of the “visitor industry” in the year 1898. During the previous year, Miss Helen Gould (daughter of Jay Gould, the railroad financier) convinced Flamy Landa that his private estate (the site of the Comal Springs) would make a successful recreational destination. Within a short period of time, the International and Great Northern Railroad Company along with the Missouri, Kansas and Texas Railroad Company had both laid their tracks into the park. Excursion trains from San Antonio and other Texas cities came every summer weekend. Thousands of peo
ple swam, danced, rowed boats, picnicked and attehded outdoor concerts long before the days of automobile and airplane travel.
Now, 92 years later, New Braunfels has continued and expanded its relationship with the out-of-town visitor. Visitors leave behind approximately $100,000,000 in expenditures in New Braunfels and Comal County annually. The Schlitterbahn Water Park in New Braunfels attracts more than
400.000 visitors in less than four months each year. The annual Wlustiest celebration each November attracts 150,000 visitors in ten days. Natural Bridge Caverns attracts
500.000 visitors annually. Canyon Lake has approximately 2.5 million visitors annually. New Braunfels now attracts 1,000,000 visitors per year and ranks in the top IO percent of all Texas cities in direct expenditures by visitors.
What role does the city of New Braunfels Parks and Recreation Department play in our community’s visitor industry? What have been the benefits to the local citizens and community? Some of these issues are addressed in the following text.
New Braunfels is a community of 30,000 people, but its Parks Department and 27 permanent staff handle approximately 400,000 patrons annually. Three parks and their facilities (of 13 city parks) attract significant numbers of visitors. These municipal parks have over time evolved into essentially “regional parks” serving the San Antonio metropolitan area and south central Texas.
As mentioned earlier, Landa Park first encountered tourism as a private park in 1898. The park was operated as a private business until the parent company failed during the Great Depression of the 1930s. In 1936, the city of New Braunfels purchased the then-closed park for public recreation. For the next 54 years, a myriad of recreational facilities came and went as the community’s and area’s recreational needs ebbed and flowed. Among those recreational facilities no longer offered are a semi-pro baseball field and a horseback riding trail. The current recreational facilities concentrate on family and water-oriented recreation.
Landa Park now serves approximately 1400+ group picnic reservations annually. Some picnicking groups have as few as 30 participants. The largest group may have over 1,200 participants at their function. Over 38 percent of these reservations

WASHINGTON -A nutrition organization was hopeful that a nutritionally complete ‘‘hi-tech” food tablet would help erase world hunger problems, until a study revealed that one of the ingredients could cause significant weight loss.
Researchers in Europe found that an ingredient in the aptly named product Food Source One actually caused people to lose weight, even though specifically instructed not to aller normal eating patterns, according lo one study published in the prestigious British Journal of Nutrition. Researchers in an earlier study had speculated that the weight loss was due to a decrease in the intestinal absorption of calories.
While the development of Food Source One, a project of National Dietary Research, would not be used to successfully fulfill its original goal, the discovery has been a windfall for overweight people. A Daytona Beach, Florida woman fighting a weight bailie for 12 years used the product on the recommendation of her physician and lost 30pounds. She stated, “Not only have I lost 30 pounds but my cholesterol has dropped from 232 to 143.1 have twoclosets full of clothes which have not fit me in two years that I can now wear.” In a separate report, a telephone interview revealed that a Wilmington, North Carolina pharmacist lost 14 pounds in 15 days on the product and was never hungry.
