Kizzo's bid for a political comeback Goode will face Republican John Egan in November’s general election in a city where Democrats outnumber Republicans by a 5-ti>-l margin "No concessions,” said a disappointed Rizzo, who insisted on getting a good night's sleep while awaiting the final figures today Goode had been favored to defeat the tough-talking former policeman, who served two terms as mayor from 1972 to 1900 but was barred by law from seeking a third consecutive term Returns from 98 percent of the city's 1,794 precincts put Goode ahead by more than 42,000 votes 312,219, or 53.2 percent, against 270,115, or 46 percent, for Rizzo Four other candidate" in Tuesday's Democratic mayoral primary shared 20.OOO other votes Egan captured the GGP mayoral nomination with 58.920 votes, compared to former US Rep C harles Dougherty’s 25.413 votes and former city controller I hon las (Iola s 21.581 "We are here to celebrate a great victory. not for ourselves but for every neighbor hood in the city,” Goode told his jubilant supporters early today "We are going to build a city for everyone, those who are black, those who are white, those who are Asian We want to bring economic growth here, we want safe streets, and we want most of all for this city to move forward ” The 44-year-old Goode, former chairman of the Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission and for three years managing director of America's fourth-largest city in the cabinet of retiring Mayor William Green, refused to regard his triumph as a victory carved out of black neighborhoods "This campaign has been won by all people working together," Goode told cheering supporters Although Goode would Im* the first black mayor in the three centuries since Philadelphia's founding by William Penn, the primary campaign contained few of the racial overtones that marked Harold Washington’s recent successful bid for mayor of Chicago If Goode is elected, it would put black mayors at the helm in four of the nation's six largest cities Chicago, Dis Angeles, Philadelphia and Detroit Syria still balking on troop agreement WASHINGTON r AP I With special envoy Philip Habib opening new talks on withdrawing foreign forces from lebanon.
