S ANO DI AU RS May Motorcycle Safety Month By ROBERT STEWART Staff Writer May has been designated by Gov. Ann Richards as Motorcycle Safety and Awareness Month. Rider training is the focus this year in the effort to increase awareness of motorcycle safety. Although motorcyclists arc more vulnerable to injury in a crash, there were fewer motorcyclist fatalities in 1990 than in the past IT years. Last year, 197 motorcyclists were killed in accidents, a 21 percent reduction from 1989 Mandatory helmet use and rider training contributed to this decline. Research shows that 92 percent of the motorcyclists involved in accidents were self-taught or loamed from family or friends. With advanced training, experienced motorcyclists can learn to ride better and reduce the possibility of accidents. The Texas Department of Public Safety’s Motorcycle Safety Bureau offers beginning and advanced training courses in at 31 location* throughout the state. The eight-hour experienced rider course polishes the necessary physical skills of cornering. braking, and swerving, those skills found to be lacking in accident-involved riders. Another focus of the course is developing strategics to sec and be seen to lower the risks of riding. Locally, the course will be taught in Schertz beginning May 21. The cost is $55.00 and advanced registration is required at (512) 658-1050. The course will also be taught at Southwest Texas State University in San Marcos beginning June 14 for $50.00.
