2 QUAKES IN SPAIN KILL 10, INJURE DOZENS
MADRID ~ Two earthquakes struck southeast Spain in quick succession Wednesday, killing at least 10 people, injuring dozens and causing major damage to buildings, officials said. It was the highest quake-related death toll in Spain in more than 50 years.
I he epicenter of the quakes — with magnitudes of 4,4 and 5.2 — was close to the town of Lorca, and the second came about two hours after the first, an official with the Murcia regional government said on condition of anonymity in line with department policy.
Dozens of injured people were being treated at the scene and a field hospital was set up in the town of about 85,000 people, officials said.
RAPPER AT POETRY NIGHT DRAWS GOP IRE
WASHINGTON — There were love poems and folk tunes. T here were classic verses and modern odes. There were sound effects and a gritty rap.
Michelle Obama’s evening of poetry at the White House rolled out seamlessly Wednesday night, showcasing the impact of such words on American culture. T he fireworks erupted earlier, as Republicans cried foul before anyone had uttered a word.
President Barack Obama opened the night by describ-ing a great poem as one that "resonates with us, that challenges us and that teaches us something about ourselves and the world that we live in.” An all-star lineup of poets and musicians performed.
It was the inclusion of Cirammy Award-winning rapper and actor Common that drew complaints from Republicans, who said some of his lyrics celebrate violence. Common, who is considered fairly tame as rappers go, is known for rhymes that tend to be socially and politically conscious.
GADHAFI FORCES PUSHED BACK FROM MISRATA
1 R1POLI, Libya — Pressing to break a two-month siege, rebels in the port city of Misrata said they had captured the local airport and pushed Moammar Gadhafi s forces ever further from the city’s western outskirts.
I he reported advances were the latest in a recent flurry of accounts of rebel victories, coinciding with intensified NAI () airstrikes on Gadhafi’s forces in several areas of Libya. In all, NAT O said Wednesday, the alliance has carried out more than 2,400 airstrikes since March 31 as part of the effort to assist the rebels and pressure Gadhafi to end his 42-year authoritarian rule.
At least four air strikes appeared to target central Tripoli overnight. Their crashing sound was clearly audible from the hotel where foreign journalists are staying in the Libyan capital.
LOHAN SAYS SHE'S GLAD THEFT CASE RESOLVED
LOS ANGELES — A lawyer entered a no contest plea Wednesday for Lindsay Lohan in the theft of a necklace, setting the stage for a summer of confinement, counseling and community service.
Defense attorney Shawn Holley made the plea for the actress, who did not appear in court in the misdemeanor case involving a $2,500 necklace taken from an upscale shop in the Venice area of Los Angeles.
Lohan, 24, did not acknowledge guilt through the plea, but the court will log the case as a conviction.

population of about 465,000, is a leaf-shaped expanse of rich soil between the Mississippi and Yazoo Rivers, extending about 200 miles from Memphis, Tenn., to Vicksburg, Miss. Along the way are towns whose names are familiar to Civil War buffs, aficionados of the blues, and scholars of the civil rights era: Clarksdale, Greenwood, Greenville and Yazoo City.
While some farms in the cotton-, rice- and corn-growing Delta are prosperous, there is also grinding poverty. Nine of the 11 counties that touch the Mississippi River in Mississippi have poverty rates at least double the national average of 13.5 percent, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.
The governor said the state is asking local officials to get in touch with people who might have no electricity and phones and thus no way to get word of the flooding.
“It’s a tiny number, hut we have to find them,” Barbour said.
Late Wednesday, President Barack Obama signed a disaster declaration for 14 counties in Mississippi.
RENA IARA, Miss. (AP) — Floodwaters from the bloated Mississippi River and its tributaries spilled across farm fields, cut off churches, washed over roads and forced people from their homes Wednesday in the Mississippi Delta, a poverty-stricken region only a generation or two removed from sharecropping days.
People used boats to navigate fkxxied streets as the crest rolled slowly downstream, bringing misery to poor, low-lying communities. Hundreds have left their homes in the Delta in the past several days as the water rose toward some of the highest levels on record.
The flood crest is expected to push past the Delta by late next week.
“It’s getting scary,” said Rita Harris, 43, who lives in a tiny wooden house in the shadow of the levee in the Delta town of Rena Lara, population 500. “They won’t let you go up there to look at the water.”
Officials in the town, which has no local newspaper or TV stations, tried to reassure residents that they are doing what they can to shore up the levee and that they will warn

people if they need to leave.
Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour urged people to get out if they think there is even a chance their homes will flood. He said there is no reason to believe a levee on the Yazoo River would fail, but if it did,
107 feet of water would flow over small towns.
“More than anything else, save your life and don’t put at risk other people who might have to come in and save your lives,” he said.

ATLANTA (AP) — Republican Newt Gingrich said Wednesday he’s running for president because his experience has prepared him to return America “to hope and opportunity.”
Gingrich In a Post on Twitter Wednesday, the former House speaker made official what has been an open secret for months:
‘ Today I am announcing my candidacy for president of the United States.”
In a YouTube video, Gingrich assures viewers, “There’s a much better American
future ahead with more jobs more prosperity, a better health system, longer lives, greater independent living and a country that is decentralized under the 10th Amendment with power once again back with the American people and away from the Washington bureaucracy.”
He cites his work with President Ronald Reagan and his time as speaker of the House when he says he led the fight to balance the budget, cut spending and reform welfare.
“We’ve done it before. We can do it again,” Gingrich said in the two-minute online video.
Gingrich struck a combative
tone, too, saying at one point: “There are some people who don’t mind if America becomes a wreck as long as they dominate the wreckage.” He also said, “We Americans are going to have to talk together, work together, find solutions together and insist on imposing those solutions on the forces that don’t want to change.”
In an interview on Fox News, Gingrich came out
swinging against President Barack Obama, accusing the Democrat of using “scare tactics” to attack Republican Rep. Paul Ryan’s budget proposal and GOP views on immigration reform.
“President Obama should be ashamed of himself,” Gingrich said. He assailed Obama’s foreign policy as “a very, very discouraging mess” and labeled his energy policy “anti-American.”
