New Braunfels Herald Zeitung (Newspaper) - May 7, 2005, New Braunfels, Texas Page 6A — Herald-Zeitung — Saturday, May 7, 2005 Indians scalp RangersBASEBALL CONTINUED FROM Page 5ACanyon falls; Rangers advance scored Ryne Pritchard and Will Kempt s double plated Tijerina. After Canyon came up short in the bottom half of the fifth, both pitchers combined to retire the final 12 batters. “The kids never gave up — they did a great job of trying tonight,” Garza said. “We just didn’t get the hits we needed when we needed to. I don’t think we got IO hits in the two games against a quality team, and you can’t do that in the playoffs." Canyon was picked to finish last in the six-team district and far surpassed expectations by finishing third. Six seniors leave —Thompson, Gomez, Brian Woodrum, Michael Tabler, Matt Schumann and Cory Brunnemann — leaving high expectations for next year. “There are things to look forward to," Garza said. “We have some good, young players in the system, so we will be back." Schumann leaves having fulfilled his two goals in high school. “One was to play (football) in the Alamodome and the other was to make the (baseball) playoffs," he said. “I got to do both."Smithson Valley I, SA Southwest 0 SAN ANTONIO — The Rangers scored an unearned run in the bottom half of the seventh inning to defeat SA Southwest at Converse Judson Friday, bringing to an end their Class 5A bidistrict series. Smithson Valley (21-7) will face SA Taft (14-12) in a best-of-three series all at Wolff Stadium in San Antonio. The first game will be Thursday at 7:30 p.m. with Game 2 scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Friday. A third game, if necessary, will be played at I p.m. Saturday. Southwest coach Glynn Tschirhart gambled by having his ace, Jacob Rendon, throw Friday’s game instead of Thursday's opener, which Smithson Valley won 9-2. Rendon fanned seven Rangers, but his counterpart, Bryant Sparkman, was stellar, whiffing four in going the distance. “Sparky pitched a great game for us,” Rangers coach George Proctor said. “It was a good game — we just made a few mistakes, like leaving the bases loaded (in the first) and not being able to get guys in who were in scoring position. “The guys were excited — they wanted to make things happen, but they wanted to make them happen all at once.” In the seventh, Sparkman’s grounder to short was erred by the shortstop, and Carly Thompson went in as courtesy runner. Kendal Volz, who walked with one out, was forced at second on Reagan Moczygemba’s fielder’s choice, leaving men on first and third with two gone.Truxton Fox slapped his second single of the night to left field, plating Thompson for the game-winner. Fox finished 2 for 3 and Clay Fuller was 2 for 4 for the Rangers, who got a double by Joe Pawelek and a single by Jonathan Rosfeld.FRIDAY Medina Valley 7, Canyon 3 SAN ANTONIO — Canyon got off to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first, but the Panthers answered with three unearned runs in the bottom half and never trailed again in the opener of the teams’ Class 4A playoff series at St. Mary's University’s V.J. Keefe Stadium. Ben Nelson (5-3) gave way to Trenton Irwin after 4 1/3 innings. Canyon made it 5-3 on two doubles and a throwing error in the top of the fifth, but the Panthers scored two more in the bottom half. Canyon finished with seven hits; Medina Valley had eight. The Cougars committed four errors. ARLINGTON (AP) — Travis Hafner and Jhonny Peralta hit two-run homers in Cleveland’s seven-run first inning, and the Indians went on to an 8-6 win over the Texas Rangers on Friday night. Cleveland, which has been so inept offensively, got all the runs in its highest-scoring inning of the season after two outs. Flafner’s homer, which made it 2-0, was hit so high and far that right fielder Richard Hidalgo just turned and watched. The homer by Peralta, the No. 9 hitter, was the sixth straight Cleveland hit and chased Pedro Astacio (1-4). Alfonso Soriano hit a pair of two-run homers for Texas, which had its three-game winning streak snapped. Hank Blalock had three hits, including a solo homer. Alex Cora, leading off for just the third time this sea son, started the game with a single. After Hafner’s homer, Casey Blake and Ben Broussard had consecutive doubles. Jose Hernandez then had an RBI single and Grady Sizemore a run-scoring triple. Cliff Lee (3-1) was the beneficiary of the seven-run lead before throwing a pitch, and held Texas to three runs and eight hits over 51-3 innings. Bob Wickman pitched the ninth for his eighth save in IO chances. After pinch-hitter David Dellucci walked to start the ninth, Michael Young grounded into a double play on a close play at first. Young argued with first base umpire Gary Darling, and then manager Buck Showal-ter came out and was ejected — the first time he’s been thrown out of a game in three seasons with the Rangers./ Devotional Page 6375 FIRST BAPTIST CHURCH 733 Cross St. • New Braunfels, TX 78130 830.625.9124 • Sunday Worship: 8:15am, 10:45am, 6pm Sunday School: 9:30am Regan Miller Pastor Come Experience God’s Life, Love cfi Power JEANNE EDWARDS • TWent>-one yean experience in real estate and mortgage banking • A multi-million dollar top producer St* (830) 708-0003 Unity Church of Practical Christianity 408 Gruene Rd. • 830-608-9515 vin • [email protected] Weddings - Funeral/Memorial Serv ices Spiritual Counseling Rev.
