Tournament of Roses Parade. Jose Lopez and Richard Guggenmos pose with 1994 State Jr. Champion, Josh Newsham (holding trophy). During his exhibition against 16 players, Newsham beat all comers except for one, Jose Lopez, who earned a draw with the champ.
CMS chess team enjoys another successful year
Canyon Middle School Chess Team. the defending 1994 State Champs, enjoyed a highly successful chess season during the 1994-’95 school year.
Members of this year’s state tournament team were: Megan Anderson, Brandon Berry, Ruben Gonzales, Richard Guggenmos, Jason Hewitt, Adam Jones, John Kennedy, Justin LaVergne, Jose Lopez, Josh McMillan, Austin Moede, James Moos, Matt Nelson, Michael Nunnery, Cheryl Scott, John Toeller, and Danny Torres. The sponsor/coach of the team is Canyon Middle School elective teacher, Layne Hendrick.
The team participated in two simultaneous chess exhibitions with U.S. Chess Federation expert, David Lein-bach, and 1994 State Jr. Champion, Joshua Newsham. Both Newsham and Leinbach won all their games except
for one. Jose Lopez earned draws with both players.
The team won first place at the Done Miller tournament in San Antonio, first place at the C D. Fulkes tournament in Round Rock, and second place in the South Central Regional Tournament held at CMS They also finished 8th out of 22 middle school teams in the State Jr. Championship hejd this March in Austin.
James Moos won the top Junior trophy at the 1995 fiesta Open Chess Tournament in San Antonio He defeated two highly rated players to earn his prize, and his accomplishment was noted in Texas Knights, the official magazine of the Texas Chess Association.
