Hogs calm at Final Four SEATTLE (AP) — The Arkansas Razorback* arrived for another Final Four appearance on Thursday in a subdued mood, ready to defend their NCAA championship after a perilous journey through the regionals. "It's a totally different feeling." Coach Nolan Richardson said after the team arrived at its hotel ' Our guys are much mort low key. There s not all the jumping up and down.' "We know a's another day at the office. We hope we're not treating this game any differently than any game we play on the road." CENTRAL TEXAS HEALTH RESEARCH 609-0900 Money-driven college sport still thrives By DENNE K FREEMAN AP Sports Writer DALLAS (Ad*) — College sport has become a money-driven and sometimes back stabbing bunch of chief execuuve officers, athletic directors and coaches tr>mg to keep one jump ahead of the bill collector while striving to produce teams that will keep the alumni happy This is no news bulletin But it seems the economic umes keep getting harder for schools trying to fund alhleuc teams. And the competition for those dollars keeps getting meaner and nastier. When the College Football Association was formed, it put together some nice television packages where all members could share equally. But it didn t last long The ringing of the cash register saw the Southeastern Conicle ne: bolt lo greener paydays and better television packages. Notre Dame sougnt to pile up television gold as high as its golden dome You know the stop/ It fast became a dog-cat-dog w orld So where will collegiate athletic s be in the year 2000'.' Nobody can be sure But the schools in the Big Eight Conference and the four schools of the Southwest Conference which form the Big 12 Conference wart a heavy hitter like Steven J Hatchet! taking them there Hatched, 48, has a big resume and big ideas He also knows television network presidents by their first names He could the names of most television, radio, and newspaper reporters in the circles in which he deals. He can make a business deal that would make a horse trader’s head swim. He could run General Motors, although he probably doesn't know a gasket from a sparkplug. “With Steve Hatched as commissioner, I’m confident we (The Big 12) will be a major force nationally,” said Oklahoma president David Boren This was why Hatched got the job and Kansas athletic director Bob Frederick didnt. Frederick isn’t as experienced as Hatched. If Hatched had become the SWC commissioner five years ago, he proba Ny would have saved it He did a great job of patching it together while he Analysis could. "He has a proven track record." Boren said. “He’s the right blend of experience, marketing and energy .” Jon Wefald, chair of the search committee and president of Kansas State, said "Hatched is indeed an ideal person to be the first commissioner of what will become the nation’s premier conference. Steve has the right mix of proven skids in administering major division LA athletic programs, a national profile through his work as executive director of the Orange Bowl committee, a thorough knowledge of the media and a leadership style that will bring strength, confidence and integrity to the Big 12 Conference " Hatched was a driving force in putting together a $100 million television agreement for the Big 12 until the year 2(XX).
