McKenna Legacy Foundation spent just $40,397 more on charitable giving to non-McKenna organizations in 2009 than it did on the compensation of its two top executives, according to the foundation’s IRS Form 990.
The foundation, formed to create a legacy of community giving funded by the $84.5 million sale of the former McKenna Memorial Hospital to Christus Santa Rosa Health System in 2008, handed out $994,526 in grants to 26 non-McKenna service organizations in 2009, while paying its two top executives at the time, Chief Executive Officer Tim Brierty and Chief Financial Officer Allen Strickland, a total of $954,129, according to the foundation’s Form 990.
The 2009 Form 990, the most recent tax year record available, was obtained from the Internal Revenue Service via GuideStar, an organization working for transparency in charity organizations.
According to the 990, Brierty’s base compensation was $362,513. He also received $257,850 in “bonus and incentive compensation” and $17,768 in “other reportable compensation.” Also listed on the form were $16,554 in “retirement and other deferred compensation” and $15,339 in non-taxable benefits. In all, Brierty’s compensation totaled $670,024 for 2009.
According to the same 990, Strickland’s base compensation was $192,007. He received $58,850 in “bonus and incentive compensation” and $4,324 in “other

Guests at Landa Park's 75th Anniversary Moonlight Gala toast to many more years to come Saturday.
► MOONLIGHT GALA AT PARK
Hundreds celebrate 75 years of Landa
By Megan Holt
The history of Landa Park was kept alive Saturday evening as onlookers watched womens dresses swoosh and listened to men’s polished shoes clink on the sidewalk as they danced the night away.
About 400 guests attended Landa Park’s 75th Anniversary Moonlight Gala to commemorate the park’s 1936 opening to the public, said Stacy Laird-Dicke, City of New Braunfels parks and recreation director.
Beginning at 6:30 p.m., guests were invited to bid on more than 60 silent auction items, drink wine and beer and listen to the sounds of the Sentimental Journey Orchestra.
Planning for the event began last October, said Audie Gibson, New Braunfels Parks Foundation secretary.
“This is a great time for the city to come together, acknowledge the park and put the love back into it,” Gibson said. “Landa Park is the jewel of the city.”
Funds raised at the gala will be used by New Braunfels Parks Foundation to restore the 1896 Landa Park gazebo, Gibson said, which will cost about $12,000.
“There is no record of the gazebo ever being restored,” Gibson said. “It’s one of the oldest structures in the park.”
According to Mayor Bruce Boyer, the Landa Park gazebo’s foundation is sinking; therefore, it needs to be restored quickly.
“The gazebo is the focal point of Landa Park,” Boyer said. “The Landa family was gracious enough to sell the park with the idea that it would be made available for the community to enjoy for years to come.”
Marie Offerman, E.P. Nowotny’s niece, said her uncle was the reason why Landa Park is now open to the public.
