The Pedernales Electric Co-op Board of Directors received some promising fiscal news March 21 that indicated PEC is off to a good start in 2011.
Chief Financial Officer Mike Vollmer reported that, as of the end of February, PEC’s controllable expenses were $3 million less than what the Co-op had budgeted for in 2011.
“We continue to watch controllable expenses very carefully,” Vollmer said, “and we continue to add total assets month after month.” Vollmer said a majority of the increase is because of the addition to distribution system assets, which is coming from PEC’s construction program to meet new customer demand.
The directors focused on two key governance issues. First, the board agreed to amend the section of the bylaws defining the qualifications to serve as a director.
This amended language will be posted on PEC’s website for member comment and will be considered for passage at the April board meeting. Second, they approved language for the 2011 election ballot. This ballot will give members an opportunity to provide input which will be

considered as PEC examines possible changes to the process by which directors are elected.
CEO R.B. Sloan, in his first Board meeting since assuming his new role, reported he had conducted 12 meetings with employees throughout the PEC service area in the previous week.
"My assessment of the employees, my assessment of the facilities, my assessment of the system is that it is First class,” Sloan said. “It was a pleasure to stand in front of these employees, and without saying a word you could look across those people’s faces and see a high level of pride, professionalism and talent.”
Sloan told the Board that PEC provides its members with great customer service and reliable power. As for lowering costs, Sloan said, “We’ve got a ways to go there. The employees, they’re up to the challenge.”
The next regular board meeting will be 10 a.m. April 18 at PEC’s E. Babe Smith Headquarters Building in Johnson City.
