New Braunfels Herald Zeitung (Newspaper) - March 22, 1987, New Braunfels, Texas Herald-Zttung New Braunfels, Texes Sunday March 22,1967 Page 3A EmotionsAward winner Go with the flow By DR. JOHN I. WALKER Recently, I saw a state high school basketball playoff game One team played the game with relaxed enthusiasm; they exuded joy and confidence During time-outs the coach spent time diagramming plays and reinforcing the enthusiastic attitude The other team played with desperate intensity, they were mechanical, and fearful Their coach spent time-outs yelling and screma-mg at the team, telling them what they did wrong Both teams were equally talented Guess who won0 All athletes know that relaxed confidence allows better play The relaxed euphoric state when things seem to go just right when you feel alive and fully attentive to what you are doing is known as flow or peak per formance Flow, a trance-like state. is characterized by total absorption in the task, focused concentration, distortion and altered sensory perception John Brodie, the former NFL quarterback, said that when he was plavmg at peak performance, rushing defensive linemen seemed to come at him in slow motion Michael Jordan reports that when he scored s i points against the Boston Celtics in . an NBA Playoff Game last year he wa* *o absorbed in his play that he was totally unaware of the score or the game clock Tennis players when the\ are playing at their peak are descrit>ed as being “in a tree There is no doubt that we perform better when we are totally absorbed in the task at hand VNe do t»otter in athletics in business and in our rela . We need also to practice successful living techniques to cultivate wisdom and harmony in daily living tasks When faced with a stressul family conflict we essentially have three choices I Fight it; 2 Flee from it and 3 Flow. To learn to flow when things get tense around the house, practice composure and a calm attitude The more you think calmness and relaxa Hon. the easier it becomes to deal w Uh conflict and tension Vision All peak performers visualize success Before shooting a free throw, skilled basketball players see the ball tipping through the net Before the great golfer Jack Nicklaus hits each ball, he vividly pictures where he wants the ball to go Likewise if we visualize a happv home in our mind s eye. we w ill work toward a happv home If we visualize business success our positive expel tations will enhance peak per formance A Cosmic View of Life. Having a cosmic view of life means that our individual lives are insignificant compared to the vastness of the universe Most of what we worry about never happens and unproductive thinking ties up our energy and prevents us from performing at our peak Can you remember what you were worry ing about exactly one year ago from today0 A year from now you will not be able to remember what you are worrying about today unless you write it down When we consider the vastness of the universe, our daily irritants become insignificant and we can concentrate on our goals instead of our worries Enjoy life On a recent ski trip I heard a fellow vacationer exclaim. as she awkwardly struggled up an ice) embankment toward the ski lift. •Are we having fun. vet0” Of course this question caused the rest of us awkwardly struggling individuals to laugh at ourselves and made me think we would do well to ask ourselves each day. "Am I having fun lf we are not having fun why not’’ Life is meant to be enjoyed One of these days God w ill hold us accoun table for all the things He gave us that we did not enjov If we are going through life tense uptight, worried and anxious we are not having fun and we cannot perform at our peak without enjoyment Dr Walker is medical director of Hill Country Hospital in San Antonio and ha> a private psychiatric prac Hee in New Braunfels JCPenney saves your money! \coUpon'} SALE I 25% off anything th* coupon I Mon. thru Wed.
