Insurance firms merge
Witting & Miller Inc. has merged with Schriewer and Associates.
“This project has taken several months and I am proud to announce our merger, which I believe will be beneficial to our clients and the community,’’Miller said.
In addition to cost savings other benefits seen by the merger include the combination of experience and better buying power with the insurance carriers. Some of the major carriers the four represent now are: Maryland Casualty, Gulf, Hanover, Millers, Providence Washington, Trinity Universal, Prudential, Blue Cross/Blue Shield, Dairyland County. Mutual and other surplus lines and life insurance companies. They currently are licensed in five other states and represent more than 90 carries, with annual sales in excess of $5 million.
“With this merger, we will have more than IOO years experience in the insurance business in one office. This will be a tremendous asset for our clients,” Miller said, adding that the only change Schriewer and Associates clients would experience would be the move of their offices to the former New Braunfels Herald building at 186 S. Casten next to Krause’s Cafe.
Frank Witting, executive vice president and member of the New Braun
fels Downtown Advisory Board, touted the benefits of having more activity in the downtown area. “It’s really a good move for us, our clients and the city of New Braunfels,” he said.
Russell Stollewerk and Charlie Schriewer have been in the insurance business since 1975. Both are lifetime residents of New Braunfels and New Braunfels High School graduates. “This is a tremendous opportunity for all of us and Charlie and I want to let our folks know that we and all our staff are going to be right here for them, just like we’ve always been," Stollewerk, Schriewer and Associates will continue to operate under the name and will keep the same phone number.
Witling & Miller was established in 1984 by Miller, who was a partner with Murray Ferguson and Witting, who was and still is the Prudential agent for New Braunfels. In 1988, they purchased the old New Braunfels Herald building and remodeled it for their main office. In addition to their New Braunfels offices, they have offices in Seguin and Universal City. All their offices are licensed to sell everything from life insurance to car insurance.

This is it. I have watched as the market skyrocketed to new highs. The Stan dard and Poors index of 500 stocks broke through the 360 range only to sputter and fizzle on Thursday. Most analysts believe this is the beginning of a healthy correction or decline in stock prices. Why so much emphasis on the magic 360? The past four corrections have been triggered by the failure to sustain the 360 index value.
Like an old-fashioned Jewish guilt trip, I’ll say, “I told you it was going to hap-pen.” Quit being a Scrooge and take some of those profits. At ieast consider buying a “put” to protect some of those potential profits. Have you thought about profit-taking on those bonds, yet?
What type of strategy do we utilize now? Interest rates smell worse than road-kill. I believe stocks are on a kamikaze mission. Certificates of depositor treasuries won’t appeal to you unless you are willing to commit your money for the next three decades. The best investments of the day for income are I. select preferred stock (9-13 percent), 2. some utilities (6-9 percent), 3. some Blue Chip equities with yield (3-7 percent). For growth, I would consider purchasing (puts) options on some over-valued equities.
The worst investments of the day (besides banks with RTC before their names): I. growth funds. Your broker only sold them because they have a fat commission and the company was offering to send him to Europe to a “due diligence" meeting as a sales incentive.Income Tax PreparationNB Tax Service
