which are sponsored in part by the businesses and institutions themselves. Success Stories! will run each Wednesday and Sunday in the New Braunfels Herald-Zeitung through Sept. 14.
Weston Pacharzina, manager of the Plant Hausf has a baby. Thousands of them. When you run a nursery, it’s hard not to think of your plants that way.
The Plant Haus keeps its doors open seven days a week, from 8 a.m. to 6 pjn. Monday through Saturday and IO a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday.
“You don’t just close your doors and go home around here,’’ he said.
What started as hobby for Bob Pacharzina, Weston’s father and once a teacher and coach at New Braunfels Junior High, grew into a business Oct. 29, 1977.
Today, the complex has grown from one greenhouse to seven on the two-acre grounds along Walnut St. They just mov ed into a larger main building this spring.
And there are two more nurseries in Marble Falls and Kerrville.
Visitors are greeted by a multitude of colors. House plants, bedding plants, trees, shrubs, inside, outside. You name it.
“We are basically a garden center. We don't have any of those brass attachments or anything fancy like that. We mainly' have anything that has roots,” said Weston.
He and the eight employees grow much of the merchandise themselves.
“We grow about half of our stuff,” he said. “That way, we know what has gone into the plant. We can tell the customer how it has been taken care of, w hat type of soil we used, and that sort of thing.”
Most of the business comes in three months, March, April and May, although Pacharzina said the greenhouses and outdoor stands constantly hold hundreds of varieties of plants.
A pink tropical flowering vine called the Mandevilla hangs at the front of the complex, a sort of signature plant, that Pacharzina said people always ask about.
And if you want Pacharzina, just come by any day and the Master Certified Nurseryman will be there, keeping a close eye on that baby.
