' Bosnian troops prepare for I sustained offensive
I SARAJEVO, Bosnia-Herzegovina ; (AP) — After last week’s three-day blitz, government troops appeared to be settling in for a sustained offensive to wrest supply arteries leading into the capital from the control of rebel Serbs.
The government and rebels alike claimed Monday to have captured or scattered enemy troops. But both sides limited access to strategic locations, making independent confirmation difficult.
Government forces made substantial gains around Sarajevo last week, and at least temporarily cut two Serb supply roads, U.N. officials said.
The Bosnian army appeared to be shifting troops around Sarajevo to maintain its offensive.
Associated Press reporter Maud Bedman saw a large government army convoy in Kiseljak, west of Sarajevo, moving south toward another government town, Tarcin, the staging point for attacks on a Serb supply road.
The army battled rebel Serbs all day north and northwest of the city, said Jim Landale, a U.N. spokesman.
Chechen rebel make clean getaway
BUDYONNOVSK, Russia (AP) —
Chechen rebels who stormed a town in southern Russia returned today to their battered republic with up to 150 human shields, hoping to escape the police who shadowed them by fading into the Caucasus Mountains.
After a circuitous journey through remote backcountry and a three-hour roadside stop this morning, the convoy of seven red-and-white buses — and a refrigerated truck carrying the bodies of slain rebels — passed into Chechnya.
The rebels apparently were headed toward the southern town of Vedeno, where they plan to fade into the rebel-controlled mountains and elude Russian security forces.
The ITAR-Tass news agency said the rebels also planned to release their volunteer hostages in that region.
But Interior Ministry officials, who spoke on condition their names not be used, said their forces had the column under watch and the rebels would not escape.
lf th* shoe fits, present It In court
LOS ANGELES (AP) — If the gloves don’t fit — see if the shoes do.
That was the prosecution’s tactic in the OJ. Simpson trial Monday, when an FBI shoe print expert testified that Simpson’s size 12 feet match bloody shoe
prints from a pair of rare, expensive Italian shoes.
The next witness is a shoe salesman from the Bloomingdale’s department store in New York, which stocked the Bruno Magli shoes linked to the prigts found near the bodies of Nicole Brown Simpson and Ronald Goldman.
Shoe department manager Sam Poser was to testify today. He has told investigators that he has seen Simpson in the store, but has no receipts — or even a clear memory — showing that Simpson ever bought a pair of Bruno Magli shoes, sources said.
Indeed, the prosecution’s shoe evidence appears to be among the weakest of the extensive physical evidence in the murders of Simpson’s ex-wife and her friend.
Man executed today for fatal stabbing 18 years ago
HUNTSVILLE, Texas (AP) — A man who said he snapped after his wife didn’t cook a casserole the way he liked it was executed by injection early today for a fatal stabbing.
“I would like to say that I have no animosity toward anyone," John Fearance Jr., 40, said in his final statement. “I made a mistake 18 years ago. I feel like I’m not responsible for what I done because I had a bad psychotic break."
