The big top was the evening sky, and the tent was the whole outdoors when the circus came to town Monday night.
There was face-painting and pony rides, an elephant and a clown.
There were jugglers and trapeze artists.
There was popcorn and cotton candy — and there were a few hundred kids.
That’s because children are what the circus is all about.
Ask Phillip Vineyard.
He’s 5 years old and will be going into kindergarten at Hoffman Lane Elementary School in August.
But before that, theres summer — the last one before Phillip steps onto the treadmill that begins with school and continues down the slope into adulthood and the workplace.
Swimming in the river!
Crawdad fishing in Landa Park!
And Circus Valentine, which Monday marked its 18th year in New Braunfels.
Between telling his father, Mike, that he was thirsty and needed a soft drink, and his mother, Barbara, that he and his brother, Tyler, who turns A today, could sure use some cotton candy, he eyed the elephant across the center ring, just hoping for a ride.
Elephants, Phillip said, are the best thing about the circus. He knew that even though his family’s trip to the Comal County Sheriff’s Posse Arena was his first-ever circus trip.
Phillip knew because he’d been to a zoo — and, he said, adding credibility to his claim, “That guy over there told me!”
Kathryn Wilson didn’t need to be told. Shes
been coming to the circus “forever,” she said.
She brought her daughter, Kamberlyn to her second circus, getting her started young.
She also brought her nieces and stepdaughters — two sets of twins.
Kamberlyn rode the pony — by herself. That was a pretty good feat, since she is only 18 months old.
“We went last year, but she was asleep most of the time, I think,” Kathryn said.
While Kamberlyn watched the circus animals, mom was waiting for the trapeze act, she said.
“What I like about the circus is the acrobatic stuff,” Kathryn said.
The sheriff’s posse was founded in 1959 under then-sheriff Walter Fellers, as a mounted reserve search-and-rescue unit.
Sheriff’s Posse President Roy Williams said Circus Valentine is one of the posse’s two major annual fund-raisers, the other is the rodeo in August.
“We’re a not-for-profit, charitable organization,” Williams said. “We give this money away to local service clubs and charities.”
The sheriffs pos.se also offers three college scholarships each year. One, the Walter F. Fellers scholarship, goes to a high school graduate going into the law enforcement field.
Monday night was no time to think about scholarships for most of the kids enjoying the circus — they were far too young to consider such things.
For Phillip Vineyard, school was far, far away — at least eight weeks. He was watching the circus with his family.
Mom promised she’d get him an elephant ride if they offered them.
“He’ll probably get one,” Barbara Vineyard said. “It’s his favorite animal.”
Kamberlyn Wilson enjoys a pony ride with the help of her cousin Chandler before the start of Circus Valentine at the Comal County Sheriff’s Posse Rodeo Arena Monday night.
