In a recent executive session, trustees defeated 5-2 a motion by Pam Plunkett to give 5.7 percent more pay to counselors, directors, principals, assistant principals, special education coordinator, superintendent and assistant superintendent. Mcllic Bergman joined Plunkett on the yea vote. Opposing the move were board president Corky Corcoran, vice president Jim Deals, secretary Rosemary Piper and trustees Ray Lee and Erwin “Diz” Reeves. Also discussed was the need for a school in the Bexar County portion of the school district. Action was postponed pending study by the facilities planning committee.Situation calming BLANCO — A “shootout” failed to materialize as Blanco City Council, led by Mayor Ryan Trimble, waded through a lengthy agenda with tact, restraint and humor. Verbal fireworks had been anticipated with the scheduled appearance of the local group Concerned Citizens for Blanco. Member Mary Goddcn expressed relief at the mood of the meeting. Topics of discussion included garbage collection fees, dollar cost of improvements requiring building permits and a new junk car ordinance.Widow named JP BOERNE — Kendall County Commissioners Court has appointed Gwen Meade, widow of former Precinct I Justice of the Peace Rod Meade, to fill out his unexpired term. Meade died May 15 following open heart surgery. Mrs. Meade had been an unsuccessful candidate for district court clerk. She was chosen 3-1, besting a field of candidates that included former JP Ed Seitz, defeated by Meade in September; former Kendall County deputy George Toler, court bailiff Glenn Crowe and attorney Dan Griffin.Council slate grows FREDERICKSBURG — A sixth person has joined the rank of those seeking a place on Fredericksburg’s expanded City Council. The special election, the result of a recent change to a home rule form of government, will be Aug. IO.. Two members will be elected and will serve until May 1992. Candidates include Timothy Koock, Kevin Kopplingcr, Claribel W. Hanncmann, Kenneth A. Kunz, Don Stevens and Linda Langcrhaus.Fraternity suspended SAN MARCOS — The Zeta Theta chapter of Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity at Southwest Texas State University in San Marcos has been suspended for three years following an administrative investigation of hazing and risk management violation allegations. Sanctions imposed by SWTSU officials include suspension of the group’s recognition as a student organization, prohibiting group attendance at school functions. PKA cannot recruit new members, sanction or sponsor social functions and is not eligible for Interfratcmity Council membership. The group may apply for recognition after May 31,1994. He will be involved in doing research and discussing various laboratory techniques. Math department director Beth Grayson was chosen one of 90 Curriculum Fellows in a statewide competition. She will work with Project ABCD, sponsored by the Texas Alternative Blueprint for Curriculum Development. Its purpose is to improve the quality of mathematics curriculum and instruction and accelerate classroom use of technology. Group demands vote GEORGETOWN — The Williamson County Taxpayer’s Association want the county to hold an election to gel voters’ permission before issuing up lo $950,000 worth of certificates of obligation. Kathy Hcidcman, a members of the association’s board of directors, said 30 members have signed up for the drive to collect the estimated 4,000 signatures needed to force an election. Hcidcman attended a recent Commissioners Court meeting to ask if that body will challenges the wording on the petitions already in circulation. A successful challenge to the validity of the petitions would mcna an election would not need lo be held before issuance of the debt. The court voted 3-1 to accept the wording. (AP) — A monument honoring 14 U.S. commandos killed when their Air Force plane was downed in the Persian Gulf War was dedicated in this Florida Panhandle community. “They were true heroes,” Maj. Gen. Thomas Eggers, commander of the Air Force Special Operations Command, said at the ceremony Friday. The crew of the downed AC-130 Spectre gunship was stationed at Hurlburt Field, near this town where some of the victims lived. The gunship was hit by antiaircraft fire while trying to destroy an Iraqi missile battery that threatened U.S. Marines fighting off an Iraqi incursion into Saudi Arabia in January.
