Fishing adventurous with spinnerbaits
The wind was howling, it must have been 30 mph. Our trolling was using its full 101 pound of thrust to pull the Skeeter boat through the shallow hydrilla beds. With the normally clear water now murky, I knew it would be tough fishing. But my guide and I were optimistic that the fish were still in the grass.
Our choice of lure was the spinnerbait. It covers water quickly and is relatively weedless and we have both caught lots of big bass on them. But today is different. We aren’t bass fishing. Our hopes are to catch redfish.
i Spinnerbaits resemble a crab Rimming in the shallow grass. Somali crabs are the main diet of rpdfish. The problem with most spinnerbaits is they don’t hold up to the abuse of hooking a single fedfish. With standard spinneries, the wire bends and even freaks due to the strength of the frdifsh fight. But the new titanium wired spinnerbaits are incredibly strong and even a hard pulling redfish can’t ruin one.
;■ There are several brands of titanium spinnerbaits on the tharket. But most of them are
Seminoles win at CWS
OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Mike Futrell singled in the winning run with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning as Florida State staved off elimination again with a 3-2 victory over Southern California on Wednesday night.
Futrell, 0-for-3 with two strikeouts as he stepped to the plate, lifted Ronald Flores’ 1-2 pitch into right field to score Ryan Barthelemy from third.
Flores (6-2) gave up three hits in (1-3 innings.
Jon McDonald (12-5) pitched a four-hitter for Florida State. He struck out seven, walked four and hit three batters. The only two runs he allowed were unearned.
Until the ninth, Florida State (53-18) had just three hits and the Seminoles’ entire offense came from Marshall McDougall.
McDougall hit two solo home runs, his 14th and 15th of the season. His second was his fifth at Rosenblatt Stadium, tying him with Barthelemy and former Seminoles star J.D. Drew for the most in CWS history.
The Seminoles need to beat LSU twice to advance to the championship game. Florida State and the Tigers play Thursday night.
made for bass. The only one that I know of that is specially made for redish is made by Stanley Jigs. This bait features a short tapered Titanium wire and a wedge blade. Rather than using willow retrieved slower than the willow leaf bait.
Normally the redfish are easy to see in the flats. As long as you don’t spook the fish, all you need to do is place the lure in front of it and the fight is on. But not today. We are focused to fish the holes in the grass where the redfish will be waiting in ambush.
After less than a dozen casts to the clear spots, a huge explosion occurred as I saw the reddish copper colored fish swallow my lure. After a long battle, the 26 inch red was netted. In the next
three hours we each caught and released our limit of reds twice. The Texas daily bag limit is three redfish measuring 20 to 28 inches long. Anglers are allowed to retain one red over 28 inches by using the special redfish tag on their fishing license.
Fishing for redfish I shallow grass is a lot of fun. But most anglers use spoons or cut bait. Spoons are hard to control and don’t resemble a crab. Bait fishing takes a lot of time waiting on the fish to bite. But by using spinnerbaits and using a trolling motor to move you through the grass, you will have a lot of fun and success.
This is a relatively new way Texas saltwater anglers have discovered to catch redfish. It is just like bass fishing, except you will catch a lot more fish on the average and they will also fight a lot more. Plus, just about everyone likes to eat redfish. Anywhere there are grass beds along the coast, this method will work. Normally, you will find this pattern to be most effective in the summer. For lack of a better description, I like to call it “bass
fishing for redfish.”

HU names new tennis coach
From Staff Reports
SEGUIN — Brian Surface has been named the new head men’s and women’s tennis coach at Texas Lutheran University, Director of Athletics Bill Miller announced today.
Surface comes to Texas Lutheran from Northwest Missouri State University, where he served as the tennis graduate assistant coach and as the onetime interim head coach. While at Northwest Missouri State, Surface helped coach the Bearcats to two appearances in the NCAA Division II women’s tennis regional and to one appearance in the men’s tennis regional.
“Brian is another fine addition to our coaching staff as we move into full competition in the American Southwest Conference and NCAA Division III,” Miller said. “He brings a love for the game of tennis and an enthusiasm to work with and to coach college athletes.”
A native of Murfreesboro, N.C., Surface worked extensively in the coordination of the 1998 and 1999 Intercollegiate Tennis Association regional tournaments held at Northwest Missouri State. Before enrolling at Northwest Missouri, he was an assistant tennis professional at Hollow Rock Racquet and Swim Club in Durham, N.C., where he conducted private lessons, taught adult and children’s clinics and helped with site tournaments including the North Carolina United States Tennis Association 14-and-under
“I am extremely excited about this great opportunity with Texas Lutheran,” Surface said. “I think we have a great chance to be a strong program. We’re in a great location, and I think the facilities are top notch. Overall, it is an excellent university.”
Surface was a four-year tennis letter winner at Chowan College, a NCAA Division III university in Murfreesboro, N;C. He played No. I and No. 2 singles and No. I and No. 2 doubles for the Braves. Surface also participated in the 1997 World Class Satellites at Van Der Meer Tennis Center in Hilton Head, S.C.
At Chowan, Surface graduated with a bachelor of science degree in physical education with a concentration in sports science. He is scheduled to complete his masters of science degree in physical education this summer at Northwest Missouri State.
At Texas Lutheran, Surface succeeds Kathy Horan, who resigned following the 1999-2000 tennis season. Horan coached the Bulldogs for six seasons and led Texas Lutheran athletes to four national appearances.
Surface will coach Texas Lutheran in its first year of full membership in the American Southwest Conference, a NCAA Division III conference consisting of 13 universities in Texas and one each in Louisiana, Arkansas and Mississippi. Contact the sports information office for information.
