Savor precious moments, and rest your mind
By JOHN I. WALKER, M D.
Over breakfast, my friends and I talked of time One of my friends mentioned that some philosophers believe that time stands still and we move through time Time is permenent, we flow impermanently through it The analogy os swimming or floating through time comes to mind
My other friend, a frequent European traveler, commented that Europeans float through time much slower than we Vacationing in Europe.” she said, "is like going back TO to 40 years in time In France people sit idly at roadside cafes, slowly sipping on coffee or wine in Spain they take mid afternoon siestas In England there is a quiet, peaceful afternoon tea
There are no take outs in Europe, there is food to go.
My other friend who holds two jobs, raises two kids and a husband, and still has time to give herself to worthy community projects com mented on her lack of time to get anything done When I pointed out to her the projects on which she worked she was stunned She had been so busy, she didn't realize how much she was doing
She pointed out that her husband, too. is ad dieted to activity Every Sunday he gets irritable and antsy because he has too much free time Many of us are like that
We have difficulty enjoying free time because we are so used to being excessively active W hen we have a few idle minutes we feel restive and fitful We are hooked on hurry and addicted to activity.
How can we enjoy time more ' Here are some thoughts.
REST ON SUNDAY Most of us spend Sundays as frenetically as the other six days We sleep a little bit later, but we punish ourselves by rushing to church and arriving breathlessly late. It seems like our family has its most stupid fights and picayune arguments rushing to church As we listen to the sermon, we frequent Iv look at our watches and wonder if we are go mg to get out early The Sunday meal is often spent gulping down a fast food sandwich before rushing to the tennis courts, the lake or the golf course On the golf course we get upset because the foursome ahead is playing slowly. After bur rying through our play time we return home to gulp down supper before rushing to a movie or a friend’s home Exhausting, isn t it?
The Bible says that God rested on Sunday. If it is good enough for God. it should be good enough for us
We would do better for the family to get up a little bit earlier on Sunday mornings, have a nice leisurely breakfast and the drive quietly to church. Our church time should be a time of worship where we relax and let God Pay atten tion to the scriptural readings, the liturgy, the hymns, and the sermon Take a truly worshipful attitude Have a good slow paced meal with the family and then in the afternoon sit and relax, read a good book lf you play, play leisurely En joy the privilege of relaxation. On Sunday even mg refuse to go out with friends or to work on business ventures, but instead take time to relax, listen to good music and go to bed early.
If you absolutely refuse to do any work on Sun day. you will be amazed how much more effi ciently you work on the week days.
GET UP EAKLY As Benjamin Franklin reminded us. “Early to bed and early to rise makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise.” If you get up early, you'll arrive at work early, and you
won t ne behind before you get started
BE THANKFUL FOR THE PREC IOUS PRESENT Our hurrying through time prevents us from appreciating each moment and each human encounter Take time to really listen to people At the same time be careful to say something important when talking Are you talk ing too much? Are you saying more than necessary0 Are you boring people?
MEDITATE Regular readers of this column realize the emphasis I place on daily metitation and prayer People who meditate regularly have lower levels of stress hormones, decreased blood pressure, slower heart rates and less muscle ten sion In addition, meditators have less alcohol and drug abuse than those who don't meditate Meditators are also more creative and there is some indication that regular meditation may in crease intelligence scores.
TAKE TIME IN THE EVENING FOR REFLECTION Spend a few minutes each even mg sitting comfortably in your favorite chair and reflect back on the day Ask yourself, as Benjamin Franklin did each night “What good have I done today0” What were the most impor tant tasks you achieved that day0 What did you enjoy the most0 What would you do differently if you had a chance to do it over again? What was the most fun you had during the day0 Did you make someone laugh0
Quantity is not as important as quality. Madison Avenue tries to get us to believe the gospel that more is better Not so. When you float down the river you see more than when you race down the river Likewise, floating through time allows us to savor the precious moment
