Fish and Wildlife Service wants your opinion on protecting species found at Comal Springs
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is seeking scientific information and public comment on a proposal to list as endangered three species found in Comal and Hays counties, Texas. The three species proposed for listing are the Comal Springs riffle beetle, the Comal Springs dryopid beetle, and the Peck’s cave amphipod.
In 1990, the service was petitioned to list these and two other invertebrate species by David Whatley, director of the Parks and Recreation department for the city of New Braunfels. The service reviewed the petition and found listing may be warranted for three of the species.
The service then initiated a status review which included two field surveys for the species and concluded in 1995 that the three invertebrates should be proposed for listing. A finals decision on whether to add these animals to the list of endangered species will be made within one year (by June 5,
1996). The final decision will take into consideration any additional data submitted on the species and their habitat.
All three species are known only from springs associated with the Edwards Aquifer in Hays and Comal counties. They depend on flowing, uncontaminated waters and are threatened by loss of aquatic habitat due to withdrawal of groundwater from the aquifer and also by potential contamination of the aquifer.
The species occur in Comal Springs, which is owned by the city of New Braunfels. Each species has been found at one additional spring site. The Comal Springs dryopid beetle and the Peck’s cave amphipod are each found at separate springs on private land. One specimen of the Comal Springs riffle beetle has been found at San Marcos Springs at property owned by Southwest Texas State University in an area being used for biological and ecological research.
The Fish and Wildlife Service is participating in the conservation of several endangered species, including the fountain darter, San Marcos salamander, and Texas wild rice, in some of the waters occupied by the three proposed species. If the three species proposed today are eventually listed, their conservation will be coordinated with efforts already under way for previously listed species, in keeping with the administration’s goal to encourage multiple-species conservation efforts.
The service’s proposal to list the three Texas species was published in the June 5, 1995 Federal Register. Comments on the proposed role are invited and will be accepted for 60 days following publication. To obtain a copy of the nile or to submit comments, contact the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Ecological Field Office, 10711 Burnet Road, Ste. 200, Austin, TX 78758.
Contestants sought for bikini contest at Schlitterbahn
The search is on for the new “Miss Schlitterbahn” to represent Schlitterbahn Waterpark at the U.S. Bikini Invitational Finals which will be held in Orlando, Fla. this fall. The title will be awarded to the winner of the Fourth Annual Schlitterbahn Texas Bikini Invitational, which will be held at the park’s Wave Pool stage at I p.m. on Sunday, July 16. Miss Schlitterbahn and 11 runners-up will receive cash and prizes valued at a total of $5,000.
“This is not like any other Bikini contest,” said Terri Adams, general manager of Schlitterbahn Waterpark and Resorts. “It’s more of a pageant event, where the contestants model runway-style and 50 percent of the score is awarded based on stage inter
views,” Adams explained. The winner will receive a tnp to the U.S. Bikini Invitational National Finals in Fla., plus $1,000 in cash, a swimsuit wardrobe from “Just Add Water,” and 4 season passes to Schlitterbahn Waterpark. The second place winner will receive $500 in cash and 4 season passes to Schlitterbahn. Third place will be awarded $250 and 4 season passes to the waterpark. The top 12 contestants will receive $100 each and have an opportunity to be featured in a future Schlitterbahn calendar.
Contestants must be at least 18 years old by July 16 and must have been a Texas resident for a minimum of 6 months. The judging will be based on each contestant’s score in a stage inter
view and swimsuit competition. Interested contestants must submit an application with photograph by Wednesday, July 5. To request an entry form, call Bray Creative Services in San Antonio, 210-590-6877. Entry forms also may be picked up at Schlitterbahn Waterpark and Resorts in New Braunfels, “Just Add Water” in North Star Mall, and KISS-FM radio station in San Antonio.
Admission to the Schlitterbahn Texas Bikini Invitational is included with the regular price of waterpark admission. The park is now open daily from IO a.m. to 8 p.m. in New Braunfels. For information about Schlitterbahn Waterpark and Resorts, call 210-625-2351.

The recent arrival of an antique replica check-writing stand puts the finishing touch on the interior renovation at First State Bank. The bank will celebrate its Grand Opening with an Open House June 19-23. The ribbon-cutting ceremony will be held on June 22 at 4 p.m.
The check-writing stand was built by local craftsman Gunther Havekost, and includes carved wood inserts made by J.C. Scholze, a famous woodcarver from San Antonio. It is a reproduction of a stand that was used in an Atlanta, Ga. bank around 1910.
First State Bank’s owners have given the interior an “early 1900s atmosphere.” The once gray walls have been marbleized, with various trim and moldings added. In the main lobby, suspended acoustic ceiling tiles have been removed and chandeliers installed. Additional lighting is pro
vided by alabaster sconces on the walls. The refinished teller’s counter * has old-fashioned window bars at two -I* of the teller windows. •* .•
