kNavy Seaman Jennifer J. huero, daughter of Anthony A. Ahuero of Bulverde, recently ompleted the Cryptologic echnician Communications Course.
During the course at Naval Technical Training Center Corry Station, Pensacola, Fla., students are trained in the operation and maintenance of radio printer communications.
I The course centers around cryptographic equipment operating techniques, development of teletypewriting operator skills and message format preparation. Message delivery procedures, communications security,
organization, systems, logs and files are also included.
Ahuero joined the Navy in September 1996.
The North Texas Chapter of 82nd Airborne Division will host the 15th annual Southwest Memorial Airborne Days in Fort Worth June 20 through 26. Airborne veterans from many units such as the lith, 13th, 17th and 101st and today’s special forces will join the 82nd Troopers for this gala event. Navy Ensign James N. Colston, son of William H. and Janie L. Coleston of Spring Branch, recently recieved his commission as a naval officer after completing officer candidate school in Pensacola, Fla.
He is a 1989 graduate of Smithson Valley High School of New Braunfels. He is a 1996 graduate of Southwest Texas State University with a bachelor of science degree.
Navy Seaman Recruit Michael J. Pharo, son of Mike and Bobbie Pharo of New Braunfels, recently graduated from the Basic Enlisted Submarine Course at Naval Submarine School in Groton, Conn.
During the five-week course, learned the basic theory, construction, and operation of nuclear-powered submarines. Pharo also learned shipboard organization, damage control and submarine safety escape procedures.
The 1996 graduate of MacArthur High School in San Antonio joined the Navy in 1997.
Navy Seaman Recruit Michael L. Fleming, a 1995 graduate of Smithson Valley High School, recently completed U.S. Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, 111.
During the eight-week program, Fleming completed a variety of training that included classroom study and practical instruction on naval customs, first aid, fire fighting, water safety and survival, and shipboard and aircraft safety. An emphasis is also placed on physical fitness.
Marine Private Carlos S. Cholico, son of Samuel R. and Molly Cholico of New Braunfels, recently completed basic training at Marine Coips Recruit Depot, San Diego.
He is a graduate of Canyon High School.
Navy Chief Petty Officer Glen E. Eickman, son of Howard Eickman of New Braunfels, recently returned from a six-month deployment to the Western Pacific Ocean aboard the guided missile cruiser USS Antijam.
Home-based in San Diego, Eickman is one of more than 300 sailors aboard the ship as part of the USS Kitty Hawk Battle Group,

Company Grade Officer
Colonel Jeffrey Thomas presents the Company Grade Officer plaque to Captain Frank Van Horn at Travis Air Force Base.
Capt. Frank L. Van Horn was awarded the Company Grade Officer desigration for the 60th Operations Support Squadron at Travis AFB, Calif., where he is flying the KC IO.
He recently received word of his next assignment to Randolph AFB, Texas, with a reporting date no later than July 31.
Van Horn, a 1982 graduate of
Canyon High School, is married to the former Gina Lyn Merz, daughter of Randy and Rachel Merz of New Braunfels. He entered the U.S. Air Force Academy with academic distinction in 1986 and was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the Air Force. Van Horn completed his pilot training at Laughlin AFB, Texas, in 1987.

Eickman’s ship operated extensively in the Persian Gulf, performing air-traffic control duties while supporting U.N. imposed sanctions and the no-fly zone over Iraq. He joined the Navy in 1977.
Air Force Cadet Jeffrey W. Nelson has graduated from the U.S. Air Force Academy, Colorado Springs, Colo., with a bachelor of science degree and received a commission as a second lieutenant.
During their stint, cadets received instruction, education, training and experience in academics, military training, athletic conditioning and spiritual and ethical development needed as future officers in the Air Force.
The new lieutenant is scheduled to attend undergraduate pilot training at Laughlin Air Force Base, Del Rio, Texas.
Nelson is the son of Ellen J. N. and stepson of Ted L. Legh of San Diego. His father and stepmother are Wayne E. and Donna R. Nelson of Canyon Lake.
TLU offers full slate of summer courses
SEGUIN — A new slate of extended learning opportunities is being offered by Texas Lutheran University, with many of the courses scheduled to begin dunng the week of June 9 to 15. The courses provide a variety of opportunities for professional advancement, self-improvement, practical knowledge and enjoyment, according to Arline Patterson, director of extended learning at TLU.
Courses that will begin early in June include Introduction to American Sign Language, Introduction to Karate, the Art of Brewing, Basic Real Estate Law, Floral Design, Beginning Photography, Back to Black (personal finances), Beginning Spanish, Basic Spanish for Health Care Professionals, Conversational Spanish I and Herbs.
Art classes include Drawing for Beginners, Landscapes in Oil,
Painting in Different Media, Papermaking Workshop and Basic Ceramics.
Computer classes include How to Buy a Computer, Keyboarding, WordPerfect for Windows and Microsoft Word for Windows.
Brochures describing courses currently being offered through TLU’s division of extended learning are also available at H-E-B in Seguin, the Seguin Public Library, Guadalupe County administrative building, Guadalupe Valley Hospital, GVH Teaching Center and the TLU extended learning office in the university’s Beck Center.
