The Astros knew what they were up against when they arrived for their three-game scries against Cincinnati. The Reds led them by one game in the NL Central, had the best home record in baseball and almost never lost in extra innings. "We came in here saying. ‘We’ve got to win one game,"’ manager Terry Collins said. "We didn't want to go out of here four back.” _ SPORTS CARDS They left with a roar Wednesday after beating the Reds at their own game to claim a share of first place. Jeff Bag-well hit his 34th homer and singled home the tie-breaking nm in (he 12th inning— his 103rd RBI — for a 7-1 victory that gave the Astros two of the three games. ■ Mahomet pitching a Min-naaota by Texas ARLINGTON, Texas (AP)—lf Minnesota’s Pat Mahomet pitched at home more often, he could be one of the league's top pitchers. For Mahomes, home isn’t the Metrodome in Minneapolis; it’s Lindale, Texas, the town where he grew up and where his family still lives. Mahomes was back on the mound in front of his kin Wednesday night and for the second straight lime he sent them home happy as his 6 2-3 scoreless innings led the Twins to a 1-0 victory over the Rangers. "Any time I pitch in front of my mom ... I try to make it as easy for her as possible,'’ said Mahomes, who left about 45 tickets for relatives. "When she’s out (bere. abe wants mc to win so bad. it’s almost a strain.” Mahomes (8-4), who also beat the Rangers in Arlington on May 7, was in total control all game without overpowering stuff. •KIRIN : Nella Rn* Fri.s-a nim .ggjr. FREEMAN AP Sports Writer AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Ernie Zam-pcsc, who coached Dan Fouls into 3,000-yard passing seasons, said he never expected to be in thai kind of quarterback heaven again. Now, as offensive coordinator of the Dallas Cowboys, he’s got Troy Aik-man to build an anack around, and he can hardly believe what he secs, he said. “I never thought I’d be around a quarterback with this kind of talent again. He’s the hest quarterback in football. I’ve never seen anyone any more competitive,” Zampcsc said of Aikman. Zampcsc was hired after Norv Turner, who learned under Zampcsc, quit last February to become head coach of the Washington Rcdskias. “Norv did a tremendous job with Troy,” Zampcsc said. “He had the ami and all the talent in the world. Norv helped his confidence. Troy is perfect in this offense. Zampcsc chuckled at something Turner once told him. “He told mc that Troy would go a whole practice without missing a pass,” Zampcsc said. ‘‘I believe him now. I’ve seen it.” Zampcsc said Aikman is “the most down to earth superstar I’ve seen. He drives around in a truck and likes to go drink a beer with his offensive linemen. He’s such a good person. You’d like to have him for a son.” Zampese said he often wondered what it would be like to have a great quarterback, great running back, great light end, great receivers and a great fullback behind a great offensive line, all tm the same team. With the Cowboys, he has just that — Aikman, running back Emmitt Smith, light end Jay Novacek, wide receivers Michael Irvin and Alvin Harper and fullback Daryl “Moose” Johnston. “I don’t feel any pressure because of the talent on this team. These arc tremendous athletes who respect each other. There’s no reason their performance should drop off,” he said. Aikman said getting Zampcsc from the Los Angeles Rams will make sure the Cowboys offense doesn’t miss a heat. No roan_ at the bin.
