Chaplain Center sets down roots at Fort Jackson S.C., facilityBy JEFF SHAIN
Associated Press Writer
COLUMBIA, S C. (AP) — American military chaplains have been ministering since before there was a United States, yet the Army has shuttled its chaplain training program around like a spare part for
nearly eight decades.
The unwanted maneuvers — 16 moves and 11 states — are over.
The first facility designed specifically for the Army Chaplain Center and School formally opened today with dedication a ceremony at Fort Jackson, the Army’s largest training post.
“This is home,” said Chaplain George Pejakovich, the school’s commandant. “We’re in a building that’s made for us. Jokingly, I tell people I poured these foundations real deep.’’
The $8 million, 58,OOO-square-foot school represents a quantum leap from hand-me-down buildings
often on some remote comer of an Army post. There are 20,000 volumes in the library on topics from military science to world religions, and there is Internet access.
Thirty personal computers are set up in one classroom. And as many as four sites worldwide will be able to sit in on classes via videoconferencing.
“The chaplain in Karlsruhe, Germany, could call up the schedule and see what time a class is being taught on marriage counseling,’* Pejakovich said. “Then he can call us and say he’d like to have his chaplain’s assistants sit in on the
The move to Fort Jackson also fills a more basic need: It puts prospective chaplains back among the soldiers they are trained to serve. Fort Jackson has nearly a fourth of the Army’s 2,000 drill sergeants, who train about 40,000 recruits a year.
At Fort Monmouth, N.J., where the school previously was housed, trainees had to be trucked to Fort Dix to do their work. Now it’s just a matter of packing a knapsack.
“We had always'been isolated in a place where most of the green-sbirted personnel belonged -to the chaplain’s school,’* Pqakovich said.
“Here we’re surrounded by the sights and sounds of the Army.
“The chaplaincy was bom in the field and belongs in the field.”
As long as there have been armies, there have been men of the cloth — the chaplains — following them into battle.
Chaplains have been a part of the American military since the battles of Lexington and Concord. The Second Continental Congress set thfir pay equal to that of captains in July 1775, a full year before the Declaration of Independence was signed.
It wasn’t until 1918 that the Army Chaplain School was established to
train large numbers of chaplains for World War I troops. It began at Fort Monroe, Va., but soon moved to g Camp Zachary Taylor, Ky.
That started a cycle in which the school never stayed in one place for long. Its longest stay was 16 years at ~ Fort Monmouth before the 1993 Base Realignment and Closure Act t transferred operations to Fort Jackson. J
The new school was named in honor of Charlie Watters, one of five chaplains tp earn the Medal of •> Honor. He was killed in Vietnam while caring for soldiers he had pulled to safety during combat.
