Dctcx traces its origins to Abraham A. Newman’s entry into the watch-cloek retail business in 1878. By the late 1800s Newman had well established his Newman Clock Co. and continued to be inventive. His “Newman” watchclock revolutionized the industry. Detex will open its doors to the public Thursday from 1-4 p.m. with tours of the facility. In 1906, Newman incorporated die Newman Clock Co. and sold half of his interest lo Charles E. Kenshaw. On his own, Newman later founded Chicago’s Watchman's Clock Works in 1910. He died in 1915. In 1923, 14 years alter splitting with Newman, Reruhaw acquired the Watchclock Division of Hardinge Broilers and he acquired Watchman’s Clock and Supply Co. of New York and merged them with Newman Clock Co. and Keo Clock Co., forming a single firm, which he named die Newman Watchclock Corp Afterward die company was renamed Detex Corp. We are proud to be part of your history. One of Detex’s product lines — the Personal Alert Safety System (PALs) — had its beginning with a California fireman. “A fireman had) this idea and con-1 ccpt in California. He worked for the I Los Angeles city fire department and he was down in a fire and thought if he had an alarm or some-' thing he could call The PAL somebody to him (if he were in trouble). So he made a very rudimentary alarm with a switch on it to turn on and off and that was the beginning of the concept,” said Robert MacDonald, director of marketing for Detex. That firefighter still works as a con-1 sultant for Detex, MacDonald said. “He said that every piece of equip ment that a firefighter has is aimed at getting him into the fire and protecting him while he’s fighting the fire and if anything should go wrong there was nothing at that time to save his life," said Anthony L. Mudford, vice president and general manager. The PALs units include a 95 decibel directional alarm that’s easy to distinguish from others and it auto matically sounds if the wearer remains motionless for about 25 seconds. Disoriented or trapped workers can also activate it manually. The unit does not replace the judgment and specialized training of workers in determining when to vacate an area. Detex has worked with the Austin Fire Department in testing the PALs units. Congratulations on your 10th Anniversary! Hope the next decade brings new endeavors and much success.
