PRIMETIMEToo often your sweet tooth, fat tooth gang up on you
Have you ever eaten something — a bowl of ice cream, a piece of cheese, an orange — and felt hungrier than before? Do you have urges for a particular food and find it hard to satisfy your craving unless you eat that particular food?
According to Dr. Stephen A. Levine, writing in Bestways, if the answer is yes to either of theses questions, then you have a food allergy. If you are also fat, then chances are your food allergy is making you fat. Sensitivity to food can cause you to crave that food.
Water retention, known to add founds of weight, is common among allergic individuals. The removal of an offending food can result in the loss of five to ten pounds in a week, without using diuretic.
People who are allergic to sugar experience a craving for sweets. One woman ate fifty Twinkies a day and although her stomach would hurt she would keep on eating. When her husband left for work in the morning, she would take a tablespoon of sugar — dry sugar — as soon he was out the door, because it would maker her feel good.
She would actually get high on sugar. Depression would follow, and
TLC hosting workshop for ELCA writers
SEGUIN — Texas Lutheran College is hosting a workshop for writers of educational materials within the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA). The workshop concludes today.
Leaders of the workshop are the Rev. Theodore W. Schroeder and Robert A. Silze, both staff members of the ELCA’s Division for Congregational Life. They are providing participants with assistance in writing for congregational programs, learning events, workshops, and Bible study lesson plans.4
The workshop is sponsored by the Commission for Congregational Life of the ELCA’s Southwestern Texas Synod.
she had actually made several withdrawal-prompted suicide attempts. A conscientious physician finally diagnosed food allergy and now she knows she must real all labels, avoiding sugar.
Sugar substitutes have been developed and improved until we can now enjoy sugar—free sodas, ice cream, cookies, even candy. I haven’t tried everything on the market, but my personal judgement is that the ice cream products are by far the best offered in sugar-free solids. Diet drinks, of course, are hard to tell from those with sugar — to my taste.
Do you have a hankering for fat? Not many of us are willing to admit that we do, but cravings for ice cream, chocolate bars, french fries or juicy T-bones reveal your fat tooth. Everyone

has a fat tooth, some more pronounced than others; some gang up with a sweet tooth ... and there’s the rub.
And now it is possible to sit down to a meal featuring cream cheese, mayonnaise, salad dressing and chocolate mousse without a gram of fat. There’s also a frozen dessert that’s fat-free and is a pretty good substitute for ice cream.
A fallout from the cholesterol scare, fat seems to have become the newest obsession with diet-vigilant Americans. The fast-food restaurants have begun to come up with leaner fast foods, and the word light is appearing on many dressings and cheeses. Still, dietitians are saying that too much of any good thing can be bad and suggest moderation.

Of course we could have been moderate in our consumption of fat, but the average American has been consuming 80 to IOO grams of fat per day — close to a whole stick of butter! Ideally, we should be investing no more than 30 percent of calories in fat. That’s about 57 grams for a 2,000 calorie daily intake.
There’s a way of tricking your fat tooth. It’s called “carbohydrate pre-loading,” and what you do is eat starch or carbohydrate at the beginning of each meal. Eat slowly and allow the carbohydrates to activate the hormones in your digestive system so you won’t feel as much of a craving for fat as you might have been experiencing. Good luck!
After publication of a column on incontinence, I received a telephone call from a thoughtful gentleman who wanted to share his experience He reported that, having suffered the embarrassment of a degree of
incontinence, he began taking six ounce of cranberry juice each day. Apparently this was the needed treatment for he no longer has the problem.
