0* **Acclaim plenty comfortable, plenty powerful
The Plymouth Acclaim is a stylish, roomy mui-size family sedan that offers a high level of standard equipment.
Because the transportation of those who write automotive columns can tend toward some fairly exotic machinery, I was, frankly, surprised that I found the Acclaim as pleasant as I did and that I rather regretted seeing it go away.
I Finally decided that I grew attached to the little sedan because it 'took care of me. It wasn’t a “pedal to ■the metal” performance machine and 'it wasn’t a big, plush luxury liner. But 'it’s plenty comfortable, it’s plenty .powerful and it has all the amenities ;anyone ever really needs. It’s a good 'looking car you can be proud of owning.
In short, the Acclaim provides ^exactly the no fuss kind of transporta-lion most of us need, i Actually, we drove two Acclaims.
' The first was silver with a 5-speed manual transmission and the second was an almost-black red car with an automatic transmission. The first was > member of the manufacturer’s press fleet and the second was loaned me by Amo Becker of Becker Motors in New Braunfels.
; 11 iked the automatic better.
* Those who know mc will think that’s a misprint, but it isn’t.
' I normally like to do my own gear shifting, but I found it kind of nice to be able to just kind of sit back in the Acclaim, push the go pedal and relax.
. I think the automatic better fits the personality of the Acclaim, and I’ve found that my own demeanor adapts to what I drive, so my theory is that this accounts for my reversal in preference.
Standard equipment aboard an Acclaim includes a driver's side air* bag system, power steering, power brakes, gas-charged struts and shocks, full wheel covers, low fuel warning light, halogen headlamps, counterbalanced hood (no prop rod), lower bodystde protective urethane coaling. trunk “dress up” package, dual remotely adjusted outside mirrors, full insuumentauon. AM I M stereo radio with clock, reclining bucket seats and center storage console, dual visor vanity mirrors, variable speed intermittent windshield wipers, remote trunk release, thrcc-poun seat/ shoulder belts for outboard rear seat
The Acclaim rides on a strut front suspension with a 1.125-inch stabilizer bar. and on a trailing flex-arm arrangement at the rear with coil springs and a 1.13-inch stabilizer bar. Steering is rack-and-pmion and brakes are discs at the front and drums at the rear. (Photo by David Sullens)
you firsthand that every penny (or every hundred dollars) spent was well;
worth it If I had $85,000 to spend on a luxury sport sedan. I would be glad to buy a BMW 850i.
"It may seem silly to some people, but a BMW has a personality of its own. Anyone can own a Chevrolet or * a Honda. To own a BMW gives the personal satisfaction of driving the best machine that can be produced, ;
"I feel that this is what you were * missing when you Iud the pleasure of driving this automobile. A BMW owner drives the car for himself, mn for others

passengers, and a child-proof rear door lock system.
And the base price of the car is $10,876.
You’ll be hard pressed to find a more comfortable, better equipped family car for those dollars.
The options on our tricked out factory test car took its bottom line to $ 13.325. sull very reasonable for that much car in today’s world.
Those options included clear coat paint at $77, a $319 package that included premium sound insulation. light group. 6-function message center and split folding rear seat; a $155 radio upgrade that added a cassette tape deck, and a $2,241 package that included air conditioning, power door locks, rear window defroster, front and rear floor mas. tinted glass, additional radio speakers, electronic cruise control, ult wheel, power windows and electrically operated and
Steenng is rack-and-pinion and brakes arc discs at the front and drums at the rear.
The Acclaim was introduced in the 1989 model year ami has consistently drawn high marks for the quality of its construction both from the media and in consumer testing.

My recent less than raving evaluation of the $85,000 BMW 850t has drawn comment from a number of loyal BMW fans
“I d still buy one if I had $85,000." said a New Braunfels man
And a reader — Preston I)' Albergo — in the Galveston County city of La Marque wrote. "... As an owner of a *64 BMW R69S motorcycle. I can tell

The Acclaim's base powcrplam is Chryslers 2.5-liter electronically fuel injected four-cylinder. It generates IOO horsepower at 4800 rpm and 135 foot-pounds of torque ai 2800 This is the engine with which our press car was equipped and we found it more than adequate And us fuel economy figures mem a double take. This is an honest five-passenger, four door sedan and it provides 24 mile per gallon economy rn

Available, though, if you prefer more engine, is a 3*liter V6 with multi-pun fuel injecuon that will boost horsepower to 141 and torque to 171.
