New Braunfels Herald Zeitung (Newspaper) - July 12, 1985, New Braunfels, Texas Religious focus Hnrald-Zeitung Friday, July 12,1985 5A Tests, struggles of life strengthen faith in God By REV ROBERT F. KEITH St. John's Episcopal Church Faith. An interesting word, faith. Lots of folks talk about it. Some people claim to have it. Some people w\$h they had it. Some people say you and I should have it. We speak of blind faith,-' and a ‘leap of faith” — accepting something beyond our ability to reason. We have faith in ourselves, faith in others, faith in machines, and religious faith. We ask, “What’s it all mean? What’s required0 And does it make a difference, anyway?" The author of Hebrews defines faith this way: "Now, faith is the assurance of things hoped for. the conviction of things not seen.” The assurance of things hoped for? That’a a strange mixture of words. Being “sure,” of something and at the same time “hoping” for it seems impossible. The words seem im-compatable. And, how can we be convinced of things we have not seen? That’s the nature of — that's part of the paradox of faith. Again in Hebrews, the author directs us to the lives and experiences of our ancestors, who like us. hoped and were convinced of things yet unseen. How Abraham went forth to find the land of promise. Because God had faith in Abraham, so Abraham displayed his faith in God. And so it was with Issac and Jacob who followed. And there was Sarah, trusting God’s promise of a child, while clinging to her hope. In due time she conceived and there were descendants born; “ many as the stars in the heavens...”; just as God had said. Assurance, conviction, hope — faithful hope. Faithful hope that is based on the promises of God; those fulfilled in the past, and those awaiting fulfillment in the future. They say, “You gotta have faith! Okay, right! But you can’t buy it, and you can’t earn it! You see, it is the nature of God to be steadfast, firm, trusting, and loyal to us. And these qualities, this trust and loyally, become ours as a free gift from God. To accept this gift, is to receive the gift of faith, a gift given in the hope that we will be trusting and loyal to God. Then, the relationship between God and us, the believer, is complete. There is faith. Faith is both a gift, and task. While freely bestowed and revealed to us by God, it is also a task, because it calls forth from us risk and struggle, decision and obedience. We risk, for if we struggle with hope, it is evitable we will encounter doubt! That’s a test of one’s faith, a challenge to our assurance, and yet a chance to decide about our belief — our faith! And that’s okay, because struggle we must! It is a struggle that we have inherited from those believers before Worship at the church of your choice Local_ AlnrribKi Od Dk>« Span#!* AmstiPi* OI God ?5S VV Corr.-ndtc# St Sunday achoo' 5 30 pm evangelic wkvic# 6 30 pm Saturday 6 30 p m Bible Bapttat Church 1235 E'vyntwtg Ava Sunday achoo* 10 am arorahip 11 a rn and 7 pm VVadn»*,iay *ar\<a 7 30 p rn Calvary Bapttat Church 566*av 81 W Sunday achoo* IO a rn *or*hip 11 a rn and 6 pm Wtadnaaday taryice 7 p rn Church of Christ ’ 665    81    W B-bia Class#* ‘or a1 9am morahtp IO a rn av#n>ng tworshtp and Chitd'an a Bibi# hour 6pm W#dr'#*day .a**#* lpm Nutt#'* availed# Church of Jaaus Christ of lanai Day Saints : JB6 A Sac A • .r« St Pi.#*m< d moating 9 am i#)#! ttX«fy 9 am young woman 9 a m primary 9am Sunday school 10 am sac i amant 10SO a m Croas lutharan Church V atour Synod South H<»or> and Cross Si'eat* Sunday school and adult Bt# 9am worship IO 15 a rn Eastside Baptist Church 983 mc* St Sunda* achoo' 9 45 a rn and worship 1 I a rn iiampto Vivo Baptist Church Ga< a> "ta Santa Clara and Goan mar Shasta Sunday school 9 30 P rn **or*h.p IO 45 a rn church fasting 6pm prate' maatmg Wad'-as-isy 7 p rn at 498 lOarty Faith United Church o* Christ 970 loop 337 Church achoo1 9 is a rn worship 10 30 a rn Fallow ship Voting*, da worship 11 a Bibl# Church Sunday achoo n and 6pm Solm* 9 45 and Fast Assembly oF God ’667 H gr-*,#* 8’ A Sunday schoc 9 45 a rn worship IO 45 a rn and 7 p rn A ad''aa. la* sa'* ice 7 p m First Baptist Church, 733 Cross St Sunday school 9 30 a rn worship 10 45 am and 7 p rn Aednesday dinner 5 30 p rn Bibi# study and prayer serve# 6 15pm First Church of Christ Scientist 1 37 £ M il St Sunday service IO 30 a rn Sunday school 10 30 am Aednesday service 7 30 pm Child care available First Church of Nararene '466 interstate 35 East Sunday school 9 45 a rn worship 10 50 a rn and 6pm First Presbyterian Church 272 S Krueger Sunday school 9 45 tm teiiowship 10 30 a rn worship Ham and 7pm First Protestant United Church of Christ Segum and Coll Streets Aorship 8 and IO 30 a rn church school 9am First United Methodist Church 572 A Sa' Antonio St Church school 9 30 a rn worship 8 30 and 10 50 am youth activities 6 pm 625-4513 Freedom Fellowship Church 330 Mac* berry Christian growth . ast B 3C am teaching 10a m worship 11 a m AaOnasda* meeting 7pm Green Vaney Apostolic tabernacle WPC 104 Me**}* lane Sunday school IO a m e*agamian^ serves 7 pm Bib# study 7 30 p rn Thorsda* Harmony Baptist Church 1472 M^nwa* 46 S Sunday school 9 45 a rn worship 11 a rn and 7pm gip# study 6pm Aednesday prayer moating 7 30 P m Moly Family Catholic Church 245 S Hidalgo Saturday Mass 5pm Sunday Mass Bam 'Spanish 10am end5pm fngnsh Iglesia Bathe' Pentecoetes 38S Grape St Saturday Sunday and Wednesday 7 30 p rn Sunday school 10 and 11 30 a rn worship 11 30 a rn and noon Monday prayer meeting 7 30 p rn lakeside Baptist Mission FM 725 Sunday school 9 45 a rn worship 11 a rn and 7pm Wednesday Bible study and prayer meeting 7 live Oak Baptist 335 Washington Sunday school 9 45 a m worship 11 a rn living Word Church 1254 Highway 81 I Sunday worship 10 am and 7pm Wad neadsv serves 7pm Mission Pentecoste Church 129 School St Serve es Tuesday Thursday Saturday and Sunday 7 30 p rn New Braunfels Christian Church loop 337 Sunday school 9 30 a m worship 10 30 a rn and6pm |une>r church 10 30 a m New Braunfels Foursquare Gospel Church one fourth rn,# from interstate 35 on FM 306 Sunday school IO am worship 11 am Wednesday worship 7pm New Braunfels Presbyterian Church 373 Howard Church school 9 30 a rn worthy 9 45 and I I a rn Nursery provided New Braunfels Seventh Day Adventist Church 2990 W San Antonio Si Sabbath school 10 30 a m Saturday worship 9 15 a m Saturday Northers Church of Christ 5i1 £ North St Sunday Bib# .-asse* 9 30 a rn worship IO 30 a m arnj 6 d m Wednesday B oe classes 7 X! And the struggle that we will pass on to those believers yet to come. In the test of one’s faith, it is faith that is strengthened, and honed, and given new depth. It is from this we are given the courage to say, “I believe.” The central content of our faith is the incarnation, cross resurrection of Jesus Christ, the Son of God. The life of christian faith finds its meaning in these happenings. Christ was obedient. We who are believers are called to similar obedience. And so it follows then that obedience, like hope, assurance, conviction, risk and struggle become a constituent of faith, conforming us to Christ’s own obedience. There is yet another portion of the paradox. For this very obedience means freedom! It is freedom from the tyranny of things idolized: from the frustration of meaninglessness. The strangness of this paradox is that if a person asserts their own freedom, and their own autonomy, it is lost through self-idoltary and self-grandizment! But the person living in obedience and understanding their dependence toward God. is set free from the very things that enslave and distort us. For in obedience and QIoua** SUop 1072 W. Garden 629-0186 service to God, we discover perfect freedom! The freedom of faith, directs us out of fear. That’s why St. Luke writes, “Fear not, little flock!” And as Luke urges us to be watchful, that we “must be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an unexpected hour...,” we can do so without torment. For it is yet another promise to be fulfilled, a promise like those before that the faithful were sure of, convinced of, hoped for. Because we have placed our treasure and our heart in the keeping of Jesus Christ, fear is transformed. There is much to be said about faith. It’s more than an intellectual matter. Ifs practical as well. Ifs meant for daily living. The gift of faith gives us the power to sustain our lives and maintain a relationship with God and Christ — and so it does matter. We are called to be a people like Noah and like Sarah; obedient, faithful, hopeful and free. Like Abraham, we are only sojourners — pilgrims. We pass this way, “living in tents,” risking, hoping, struggling, and knowing that this earth is not our permanent home. For we, “...desire a better country, that is, a heavenly one,” the writer of Hebrews reminds us and that “God is not ashamed to be called our God, for he has prepared for us a city.” And St. Luke declares, “Fear not. little flock, for it is your Father’s good pleasure to give you the Kingdom!
