HafilmtmjAmerica must learn from mistakes of pastBy REV. JIM HINKHOUSE St. Paul Lutheran Church
“And it shall come to pass that you shall listen diligently to the voice of the Lord your God, and if you observe to do his commandments, then the Lord God will set you high above all nations.” (Deuteronomy 28.1)
One of the best books for reading and understanding history is a huge volume by a Mr. Gibbons, called The Decline and Fall of the Rowan Kin pi re. In this book, the author points out five things that can bring any empire or nation to ruin, including the Roman Empire which was the strongest of any empire up to that time. If we don’t learn from mistakes of past history, we are doomed to repeat them. We have celebrated our nations birthday, and in the course of that celebration perhaps sung “America, America, God shed his grace on thee.”
If we know the mistakes made by past civilizations, heed them and avoid them, God indeed will continue to prosper and bless this nation. The first reason that Rome fell was because the
family was undermined — the dignity and sanctity of the home was destroyed. Family and family was split by divorce, desertion, infidelity, adultery, and therefore the basic building blocks of society and business collapsed. When the family fails, you can’t keep a society together.
Reason two for the fall of Rome was higher and higher taxes. When families break down, there are more people for the government to take care of — indigents, children, people in society without responsibility and any values. More and more people are supported by the public trough. The middle working class pay more and more taxes until finally they too give up and stand in the bread line. The public pays more and more taxes to feed and entertain the unemployed masses.
The third reason was a mad craving for pleasure. Entertainment became more wild, violent and sensual. And finally the Roman empire was brought down by this craziness.
The fourth reason for the decline and fall of Rome was the military. Rome had built a huge
