CONTINUED FROM Page 1A Parents denounce outfit change at the Stonewall Peach Jamboree, without long sleeves, they were told they could not ride with the other girls on the float. “All of a sudden, it was a huge issue, but the first letter after the crowning talked about all the clothing the girls needed, and it was not on there,” said Morgan’s mom, Christy Mims. “They never gave us any explanation. I just don’t think it was well thought out.” Jessica and Morgan are not the only court members upset over the contentious issue. Dewey Owens, whose daughter, Samantha, is a duchess, said all of the girls were suffering from one family’s actions. “It’s affecting all the kids, and there’s no reason for this,” he said. “Its even going to hurt this year’s contestants. It’s such a shame.” Owens maintains the court members knew about the long-sleeve shirt requirement before the first parade, but admitted it was not included in written correspondence to the girls. In a letter dated June 16, members of the Executive Board did try to strike a compromise with the Bigbees by replacing the black shirt with a short-sleeved red T-shirt. The family was not satisfied. "This is not an issue about the length of sleeves,” Ron Big-bee said. “This is about layering the girls up and having them stand out in the heat." The Bigbees had their attorney draft a letter to the Executive Board, stating the additional wardrobe requirements would be detrimental to Jessica’s health, but he did not receive a reply in time for the queen to ride Saturday in Kerrville^ parade. “I used to think we could work with these people, but I guess not,” Bigbee said. “I don’t think this is the way to run a nonprofit organization, especially one that is supposed to benefit the community. How is this a benefit? The only crime my daughter has committed is not layering up and standing out in the sun."
