AARP Tax-Aide volunteers undergo training Wednesday to help local residents prepare their income tax returns.

Several volunteers will be working together at the different locations with each location having at least one experienced volunteer. Each tax report goes through a quality review by an experienced volunteer before it is sent.
“Each volunteer will have reference materials and each other to ask questions,” Peters said.
“Before the person leaves, at least two volunteers will have seen the tax report.”
The volunteers are expecting a crowd to come in February with not many people seeking assistance in March.
“From about April 7-15, we see a lot of people,” Peters said.
For the past two weeks, volunteers have spent hours in training, cramming their heads full of facts
and figures in preparation for tax season.
The volunteers go through an extensive training program and then are tested at the end of the program. Once they pass the test, the volunteer becomes certified by the Internal Revenue Service.
“The tests are broken down into

Starting Tuesday, volunteers will be available at various New Braunfels and Canyon Lake locations to provide free tax assistance to middle- to low-income taxpayers.
“Working with the tax information is like being in school and having to make a IOO each time,” said Elaine Peters of Canyon Lake, a 16-year veteran of the program. “In this case it is just one person, one case, but you have to be perfect. It’s going to take patience and time.”
Although anyone who is the middle- to low-income bracket can get help with tax returns, the veteran volunteers said they usually saw the same people every year.
With calculator in hand, the volunteers spend about 45 minutes with each person, working diligently to prepare a tax report.
“We try to help people recover as much as they can and still stay within the law,” veteran volunteer Lou Toussaint of Canyon Lake said. “Having last year’s tax return would really help. Also people need to bring their 10-99s and W-2 forms.”
Other helpful information includes Social Security statements, bank statements and pension statements.
