Winners have been named in the Kraft, Simplicity and Revlon preliminary activities for the Texas Junior Miss competition in New Braunfels this week.
At a Tuesday night dinner sponsored by Kraft foods, East Texas Junior Miss from Lindale, Kelli McGonagill, was selected as winner of a $300 cash scholarship. Contestants were asked to plan a party, including the selection of guests, the choice of foods based on their own recipes, and other pre-party preparations.
Ellen Cassell, Junior Miss from Waco, won the Simplicity Style Show and a $100 cash scholarship Monday night. First runner-up was Lynn Gall of
Killeen, who received a $75 cash scholarship. The second runner-up prize of a $50 cash scholarship went to Lori Hanes of Wichita Falls.
Joann Marbach of San Antonio was also named the Revlon winner Monday night, and received a $300 cash scholarship.

County roads eyed for repair
River Road, Bat Cave Loop Road, Schoenthal Road and Kohlenberg Road are among those county roads which Roads Administrator Bodo Dietert proposes be improved by the county’s share of state surplus highway funds.
Total cost of improving these four county roads is $35,055. But the county has only been promised approximately $23,000 in state surplus funds, Dietert said. The remaining $12,055 would have to come from county funds — if Commissioners Court agrees to complete all of Dietert’s proposed improvements.
According to a list he prepared for Commissioners Court, Dietert proposes that 0.8 of a mile of River Road and 0.6 of a mile of Schoenthal Road be overlayed.
The roads administrator also proposed that a shoulder be added to 0.4 of Bat Cave Loop and 0.7 of a mile be rebuilt on Kohlenberg Road.
Cost to repair each road would be $9,742 for River Road (an 80-hour job); $6,952 for Bat Cave Loop (a 400-hour job); $7,520 for Schoenthal Road (an 80-hour job); and $1,200 for Kohlenberg Road (a 200-hour job).
All of Dietert’s cost estimates were based on an average of five men per road job at an average salary of $6 an hour for each worker.
After reviewing Dietert’s proposals, Commissioners Court designated the four mentioned roads as being those roads to receive state surplus funds. Dietert’s list will be forwarded to the Texas’ Department of Highways and Transportion.
High today will be near 60, low tonight in the upper 30s, and a high Friday in the mid 60s. This morning’s low was 30, and yesterday's high was 57.
Canyon Lake stood at 906.77 this morning, compared to yesterday’s level of 906.85.
Clear to partly cloudy skies were the rule across Texas today as forecasters expected a slight warming trend to develop.
Patchy ice remained on roads early today in areas of West Texas hit by a weekend snowstorm. Dense fog also covered the lower Panhandle and South Plains, prompting travel advisories.
Low clouds were noted over North Central and Southeast Texas.
