We’ve all wanted to do it After we grow up and find out what we want to make of our life we can’t do it any more We think we would look—well silly. I'm talking about playing like we’re someone else This past weekend my wife Martha and I were asked to attend the Murder Mystery Weekend at the Prince Solms Inn here in New Braunfels. Immediately after I was asked I called my wife and asked her if she would enjoy this little get-away and she instantly returned mv question with "YES”—’’DEFINITELY”—"DO IT!!"
The weekend started off w ith everybody getting to the Prince Solms Inn by 9 (Kip rn Friday nmht Everyone met as a group, talked and found out w ho our characters were and exactly what the play was about The point really was so that the writer of the play Donna Traill could meet everyone and find out what their attitudes were and place them as their characters She knew the characters and what mental attitude needed to be placed w ith certain characters so that the mysterious weekend would pan out the way it was supposed to Certain characters need to be outrageous and willing to make a fool of themselves to make the weekend fun and to rile everyone else up about their own character Hie I riday meeting also set the mood for the plot The town was Dry Gulch. The year was 1870 A new face has come into town and wants to dry it out of all alcohol Her name was Iphigenia Drymouth She believed that alcohol was evil and would ruin all of humanity A town meeting is to be held for all to attend Questioning if Iphigenia is right and were are to vote on drying up Dry Gulch Of course she must have an enemy -i rixie Tart owner of the local saloon Iphigenia has many supporting characters which include the local preacher, his w ife, and daughter, the
mayors wife. and a farmers daughter Trixie also had many supporters- the Sheriff- who also doubles as Trixie’s stud muffin, the mayor •sf Gulch and others During the meeting we all received character descriptions and who your enemies were and what attitude you were to display. I was assigned Ira Righter the owner and editor for the local paper-—Big Surprise My character fit perfectly with what I was supposed to be doing for the weekend We were also told to think about our character and the next day at 5:00 p m we were to show up in the evact room we were in in character for the town meeting The excitement brewed in everyone’s head about beme someone else for a day . what they w ere to wear, and most of all letting go for just one night and playing dress up
We spent the night at the Prince Solm’s which a beautiful inn filled with history , wonderful antique s and a teriffic staff who was ready to help at any time The next day everyone participating in the mystery woke up ate breakfast and hit the streets of New Braunfels in search of the perfect outfit to match their new ly found identity My wife Martha and many of the other Mystery Weekend participants shopped the flea markets, second hand shops, and department stores looking for (Kids and ends The Comal County Senior Center let everyone who wanted to have free hand at their collection of old clothes and props This really added to the fun of pretending to be someone else The time tame closer and everyone had parked themselves in front of mirrors started putting on the western wear that is so at home in Dry Gulch People started coming dow n the stairs about a half an hour before the beginning of the town meeting w here the looks and the laughs had already begun My wife came down in a dress that looked like she stole from Mae W est One
of the men came down in a white rhinestone studded
vest and cowboy hat Everyone was sure he had been possessed with the ghost of Elvis Presley.
When the whole cast had arrived the meeting started with citizens talking to the other towns people. Of course, as it normally is in small towns, the gossip had begun and the cast started to elaborate on their characters Iphigenia Drymouth of course started her lines on the evils of "alkeehol’’. Trixie Tart, Saloon owner extraordinaire started her defense on alcohol by offering the men and women drinks. Billy Bob Tyler, local stud was swamped with women talking to him about how she should be the one he needs to marry The Solm’s, at least for one night was thick with hrs, betrayal, and much malarkey as the 19 people who attended could make up. No longer were they the men and women w ho walked in the doors of the Inr the night before, they were the colorful people of Dry Gulch
By the end of the night a murder took place A trial was held and of course the sheriff had locked up and accused the wrong person We also found out through the creativity of the cast that the Local Stud was actually gay The Town drunk was actually not drunk all the time Me was just waiting for the right moment to cast out his accusations And Iphigenia Dry mouth was actually hooked to "Alkeehol” herself All in all it was just a great time watching to see what crazy things were going to pop up in the soap opera of Dry Gulch. Everyone seemed to be having a great time watching the others let their hair dow n for just one night.
Bob and Pat Brent ow ners of the Prince Solms and their wonderful staff made the week end perfect for all and many of them are w anting to come back to Dry Gulch or whatever the Prince Solms might be next
