Rice off to 3-0 start in SWC
By MICHAEL A. LUTZ
AP Sports Writer
HOUSTON (AP) — Rice coach Willis Wilson has the Owls off to a 3-0 start in Southwest Conference play.
Now he must figure out how to keep them on top.
“We need to learn how to handle 3-0,” Wilson said Tuesday night after a 66-62 victory over Texas A&M. “Every year in the conference a team gels off to a fast start and sags near the end. We’ve got to learn how to continue.”
The Owls (7-6) ended a three-game losing streak against the Aggies and extended A&M’s road losing streak to seven in a row. The Aggies (7-10,1-2) are 2-10 away from home.
The Aggies never led, but they tied it at 47-47 with 5:11 left to play. Rice regained the lead, then A&M knotted it again at 51-51 until Tommy McGhee’s basket gave Rice the lead for good with 3:34 to play.
“We worked on changing defenses and preparing for conference play and we were really prepared tonight,” Wilson said. “A&M has an advantage in athleticism but I thought we could shoot better from spots.”
Joe Wilbert led the Aggies with 32 points and Tony McGinnis was the only other Aggie in double figures with 11 points.
Adams Peakes kept his hot-shooting hand with 20 points, including four free throws over the final 30 seconds.
Peakes, who scored 32 and 26 points in his previous two games, had nine points at the half as the Owls took the lead from the start and never lost it, taking a 31-29 lead at intermission.
The Owls outscored A&M 9-2 to start the second half for a 40-31 lead, their biggest margin of the game.
“It was a tough loss,” Wilbert said. “With the freshmen we have and a young team, we put it all out."

■ST. LOUIS (AP) — The wooing of the Los Angeles Rams isn’t quite over yet.
Before St. Louis can relax and enjoy its new NFL team, the city must sell 40,000 permanent seat licenses to prospective season-ticket holders in only seven weeks. That was a significant subplot lo the city’s euphoria when the Rams made it official that they're leaving Southern California after 49 years.
The city already has emptied its pockets for the Rams, who’ll get a new $260 million domed stadium with an annual lease of only $250,000; a $15 million practice facility, and $15 million in assorted relocation fees. They’ll also control a 30-year lease that could bring in as much as $30 million a year and St. Louis is paying off a $30 million debt to Anaheim.
lf the league approves, pro football will return for the first time since 1987, when the Cardinals left for Arizona.
■NEW YORK (AP) — William “Refrigerator" Perry, Chm Doleman, Pierce Holt, Desmond Howard and Steve Beuerlein were among the players left available in the NFL expansion draft for Carolina and Jacksonville.
Except for San Diego and San Francisco, teams were required to turn over six names each for the expansion pool. The Chargers and 49ers will add their players after the Super Bowl.
No team will lose more than three players in the droll and once a team loses a player, it can withdraw one of its unprotected players. Jcksonville and CarolinaThe Deals are Better at BeckerJ.Becker Motor Company
