New Braunfels Herald Zeitung (Newspaper) - January 18, 1984, New Braunfels, Texas New Braunfels Herald-Zeitung Wednesday, January 18,1984 11A Rockets slow Nuggets Houston's Allen Leaved drives in an earlier game Scoreboard By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS Undaunted by the National Basketball Association’s 24-second clock, guard Allen Leaven took the Houston Rockets to triumph over the high-scoring Denver Nuggets by slowing the last quarter of the game to a walking pace. The Rockets went to a spread offense Tuesday night and clung to a precarious lead over the Nuggets. Houston won 124-115. “It’s one of the sets we use when we want to protect a lead and still get some points,” Coach Bill Fitch said. “It gives more room for Ralph (Sampson) and Caldwell (Jones) under the basket and gives Allen a chance to do his stuff. We try to make the clock as big an ally as we can." The tactic was most crucial in the game’s final three minutes after an 11-point Rocket lead dwindled to 112-109. Houston scored eight unanswered points, capped by Leavell’s layup and free throw with 1:33 left to put the game away. “Time was our only enemy,” Leaven said. “We want to let the clock go down as low as possible and still get a good shot. We got a couple layups and a couple dish-off s.” The 15-25 Rockets, who won their second straight game, turned out six dunks or layups in the final quarter and Leaven passed out three assists. “I think that’s the best job he’s done for us this year,” Fitch said of Leaven. “He did it at both ends. He had a couple of defensive plays that should go on the highlight film. He quarterbacked just great down the stretch.” Leaven ended with 13 points, six assists and seven rebounds.Hawks 112, Jazz 106 The Atlanta Hawks had rookies Randy Wittman and Glenn Rivers in the backcourt together during the fourth quarter against the guard-rich Utah Jazz . .. and got away with it. The Jazz has the best record in the Western Conference of the National Basketball Association, largely because of the play of their guards, including all-stars Adrian Dantley and Rickey Green and high-scoring Darrell Griffith. But the Hawks won their fourth straight game, as Wittman and Rivers, who together average just 14 points per game, led Atlanta to a 34-23 advantage in the fourth period.Celtics 122, Kings 113 Boston won at Kansas City as I .airy Bird led the Celtics with 38 points, 13 assists and nine rebounds. Robert Parish, Dennis Johnson and Kevin McHale had 20 points each for Boston, which improved its league-best record to 30-9. I^Salle Thompson led the Kings with 21 points.76ers 128, Pistons 117 Philadelphia ended the Detroit’s six-game winning streak as Moses Malone had 34 points and 16 rebounds. The 76ers, who extended their home winning streak against the Pistons to 22, trailed 72-59 in the third quarter before rallying. Julius Erving had 26 points and 12 rebounds for Philadelphia, while Kelly Tripucka led Detroit with 24 points.Lakers 108, Bullets 95 I„os Angeles snapped a four-game home losing streak and handed Washington its seventh straight defeat as Kareem Abdul-Jabbar scored 23 points. The Inkers led 54-24 in the second period before the Bullets rallied to cut the deficit to 79-75 with SH minutes left. Earvin “Magic” Johnson had IO points and three of his 12 assists thereafter to keep Los Angeles ahead.Blazers 121, Mavericks 114 Jim Paxson scored 19 of his 27 points during Portland’s 41-point third quarter and the Trail Blazers went on to win at home against Dallas The Trail Blazers pulled away from a halftime tie into a 93-83 lead entering the fourth quarter. Calvin Natt, who scored 31 points, hit 13 of 16 shots for Portland, including his last eight. On the air WEDNESDAY TELEVISION 7 pm - College basketball Seton Hell et Villenova.
